was more into foxtrot, and Selling England, but this is growing on me

This definitely isn't on the same level as the 3 that came after it.

If some of the other songs came close to reaching the heights of the bookends perhaps but as it is nah.

"this definitely isn't on the same level as the 3 that came after it."
agreed. it's better
|

lol. Apart from the bookends this album is nothing compared to what came after. Nothing in between those two admittedly brilliant songs is anywhere near top tier Genesis.

no, not as good, but it has a certain charm, it is the beginnings of something good, I like to hear a progression building up in a band, especially one who goes to such heights. Kind of gives you references, and knowledge about where they came from and how they built themselves up.

@Jamie you forget "Giant Hogweed", which, together with the bookends is 2/3 of the album. And in my book a brilliant 2/3 of an album and a 1/3 of average classic KC-inspired ballads will always be better than a full album of repetitive polished boredom like Foxtrot or Selling England.

lol wow, your taste in prog is just... wow. It seems that as soon as a prog band starts writing good songs that's it for you haha.
and I didn't forget to mention Hogweed, I just never found it to be all that memorable, at least not compared to the brilliance of the bookends and most songs on the albums that followed.

The Musical Box, The Return and Fountain are all aces. I also like Seven Stones but despite it all, album as a whole can lose a bit of its replay value. That being said, these four tracks remain classic ones and my rating remains a 4.25/5 cos of its highlights' qualities.

@Jamie 'cause you know i've got this funny thing, I only like the prog that's actually progressive. and selling england or foxtrot ain't. they're cute prog albums, you bet, well-composed, mostly classy, melodic and all, and I do like listening to them, but i don't see a lot to respect in them.

@Friday13th
I just don't dig this that much, I really love everything from about 1972 to around 1980 but I can never really get into this one, even after repeated listens.

I'd don't see how you can question their progressiveness after Nursery Cryme. BTW Hogweed is definitely in the style of Vand Der Graaf Generator. If anything they were more unique after this, and they had better songwriting for that matter.
