Yeah I'm not that big on the Who, although I should definitely give them another go at some point.

Yeah moon would’ve been a fucking nightmare to play with. You do realise Townsend ‘invented’ messing about with feedback before Jimi? and is a driving force behind more or less everything you listen to today?

Townsend is one of the all time greatest guitarists and composers.

lmao Wikipedia said Townshend invented using feedback like that to make up for his lack of skills with the guitar

"Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore said:

"Pete Townshend was definitely the first. But not being that good a guitarist, he used to just sort of crash chords and let the guitar feedback.""

Jeff Beck and Clapton were the first to record feedback in a rock song (1964), but blues musicians were doing it earlier. Nonsense.

cant pretend to know much on this issue but didnt link wray go in on some hot feedback in '58? not sure how prominent "rumble" was tho, and maybe it doesnt much resemble the kind of feedback we associate with "messing around with feedback" a la jimi

Looking into it further, blues musician Willie Johnson was said to do it in the 50s

Can't say I'm the biggest Townshend fan out there. I do believe Moon and Entwistle carried the band. The Who as a whole were still awesome and legendary though, even if their songs can be seen as a little bit "simplistic"

It was around and toyed with but not to the same extent as using it to wound your respective audience prior to destroying your equipment and being heralded as one of the greatest live bands and one the greatest bands of all time without reason.
