Just recently got into Trivium and I'm loving. Very nice review that you put together, although I actually liked the vocals... but I suppose that's because I started off with Metalcore music and am slowly becoming more into "real metal" that includes more complex and technical guitar riffs.
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and don't entirely agree with your review. However, personal rating ratings and reviews are all subject to opinion and you backed up your opinions with valid arguements, so there is no reason for you to be flamed in any way. Nice review.

1st sentence: Just cause you dont like his screaming doesnt mean he isnt doing it properly. And even if he bust his vocal cords why the **** would u care.
As others have pointed out, I explained why he doesn't do it properly. It's been explained thoroughly. When I hear harsh vocals, I want to hear them done well, and that means you have to have proper technique.
2nd sentence: There are tons of better ones. SO WAT?
If you only listened to the best you wouldnt have much to listen to.
He pointed it out because we want to listen to something good. Some bands work with minimalist, straightforward rhythm sections. Others need something more, and it diminishes the quality when the listener doesn't get that extra effort.
What really frosts me is when fanboys, elitists, and general wankers pretend this flaw is a strength. Trivium has average drumming and the bass usually just vanishes in the mix. That's a flaw, not a strength. It's like people who try to defend Danzig-era Misfits over Graves-era by saying the crappy production made it better.
3rd sentence: Just cause i listen 2 this doesnt meen i dont also listen 2 maiden. And i would listen 2 Judas Priest if i liked it wich i DONT.
To be honest with you, we generally don't think much of your intelligence or taste when you seem to have a phobia of "Shift" keys and are so goddamn lazy, that you actually type "2" instead of "to" as if having one less letter saves you the time you need to radically change your life and save the world. This Message Edited On 05.28.06

Laziness maybe, but writing 2 instead of to has nothing TO do with intelligence. And I just happen to think the drummer IS good. Just because he isnt THE BEST doesn't meen he sucks. And i also dont waste my time reading every single comment someone wrote, I tend to read the newer ones to see what people are talking about NOW. ok.

Well, it sounds to me like you were getting gratuitously touchy. We all can back up our statements and opinion, and it's only when someone doesn't that we get annoyed.
That said, your laziness is not our fault, but please don't make it our problem. So far, you've been using some pretty faulty logic. "Just because you don't like it doesn't mean he's not doing it right." By the same thought process, you also can't say he's doing it right just because you like it.
|
| |
Just so you know, I looked through the comments and couldn't find the one everyone is talking about were you explain how he isn't doing it properly.

Then allow me restate the obvious.
The tone Heafy gets from screaming can only be achieved by tightening the vocal cords and the throat. Although it does create the rasp one desires of harsh vocals, you're causing incredible stress on your throat because it not only has to flex like a muscle, but also because you're compressing the air. This is what results in that squawking tone.
Now, as anyone will tell you, you can only flex a muscle for so long before it tires. The correct way to scream is to completely open up the throat and rasp air off the back of the throat. Otherwise, you'll just cause damage from too much stress from flexing, and the intensity of the compressed air.
Naturally, in doing this, the muscles and vocal cords eventually shut down to recuperate as a built-in failsafe mechanism evolution has given you.
I believe a couple people here have mentioned that Heafy would lose his voice in the middle of a set. This is because his larynx is finally giving out from all the stress its under.
In terms of health, you may as well just be whacking your own hand with a hammer repeatedly for several hours every day. This Message Edited On 05.28.06

Just recently got into these guys. And I'm definitely loving them, I do agree with the recycled riffs and some repetition, however... they do have potential and I can't wait to see them on the Sounds of the Underground tour!

I can understand why you say he doesn't do it propely. BUT... if you like the way it sounds(wich i do) you shouldn't really care. And if you dont you shouldn't use it as an argument and you should be happy because you won't have to listen to it much longer if he bust his vocal chords.

So you're basically saying I have no right to be offended and voice that complaint? What the fuck?

the guy cant sing, the only thing i dislike about the band

Why would you be offended by the way he sings? Im just saying, if you dont like the way he sings just say so. You can't use the fact that he's gonna bust his vocal chords as an excuse for not liking his voice. It's like saying I don't like skateboarding because the guy is going to break his arm.
|
| |
That's completely different. His voice sounds different and worse because he does screams wrong, not in addition to it. Yes he can use it as argument, because it's a valid point.

I already have, but I never say anything I can't back up.

Like hell I can't. That's a piss-poor analogy and you know it. Heafy's bad tecnique is the very reason his screams sound like shit. And I'm only pointing out that this bad technique is the reason he keeps blowing his voice out. It's not because he's screaming, it's because he's screaming the wrong way.
But apparently, this concept has thus far eluded you, as you seem to be bizarrely insisting that just because you like it, that makes it perfectly okay to be wrong. This Message Edited On 05.29.06

And how long ago did this arguement start?......still going.......Done yet?

The Album has its good parts, but like the review says, its truly a bland CD and they're simply copying whats hot in mainstream metal right now, they don't seem to want to break out of that...I find Avenged Sevenfold to be alot more exciting than Trivium, but trivium is fairly new...they do have some alright catchy songs, like pull harder on the strings of your martyr, and a gunshot to the head of trepidation isn't bad either...but yeah, like the review states, the lyrics and screaming isn't that good.

| |
Im not as much of an asshole as it seems. And i realize you're right Steerpike. I hadn't understood what you originally said.
So, for my part, this argument is over.

Great album. Like H.I.M. on super-steroids. And with awesome guitarists.

HIM are better than Trivium. It's a bit sad, really.
|
| |
I don't think so^^
|
| |
Yeah me neither. That's not to say I like Trivium, but more that I hate HIM.
