It relies on the idea of some ineradicable remainder that prevents the album from achieving universality.
Read up on some Lacan.

interesting the mention of Lacan, you remind me of him. Not in subject matter, so to speak, but in style of writing. Lacan really over inflated his diction to confuse what is really a simple concept. In essence, your points are more convoluted than necessary, which I find the only major problem in terms of the actual writing.
I'm more of an orthodox Freudian, though
This explains alot. I hate Freud, to be quite honest. I find him historically important, but in any modern sense his theories are totally archaic. I'm particularly interesting in a paper by Lakeoff & Turner, entitled "More Than Cool Reason", particularly the chapter: Life, Death, and Time. Essentially the argument is that the mind works in metaphors. That is to say, we develop thoughts based on pre-conceived notions of language. Therefore, our every thought is based upon figures of speech. That's how cliches and figures of speech develop so readily anyways, they are points from which are mind can attach reactions to and use them when appropriate. I think that would make a more interesting interpretation of this album's lyrics, though of that I'm not sure, because I have not heard the album. Also, a review should talk more about the music itself, I feel, otherwise you should note that this is a analytical paper regarding the lyrics.

My point was never addressed from a few pages back:
My belief is that your review fails to accomplish what you want it to. If you're saying that this
album fails to provide a cathartic experience because the lyrics are contrived from a bastardization
of artistic expression, then I'm going to ask you why I, as a listener with almost no familiarity
with those lyrics (I have never read them, and can only make out brief passages), am granted
catharsis by listening to this album.
The answer of course is because you are reviewing but one facet of this album. Jane Doe is not a
poem, and you fail to take into account the emotional connection a few dissonant guitar riffs and
some screaming can produce. There is more to any album than just its lyrics, which is why I am able
to emotionally relate even to bands who are singing in different languages (Envy being a good
example of this.)
So while I think you're arguments are good about the quality of these lyrics (though I still
disagree, and find their universality to be quite comforting,) I think you're approaching this album
from much too narrow of an angle.

Reviews like this should be removed from the site, it does nothing but rant and rave with no worthy support. Jacob Bannon, in no way shape or form, deserves to be called an idiot simply because he "wrote" about human emotion that pertains to many.
This is undeserved negative publicity, I think it should be removed.

Yeah, it's a shame that it won't get taken down...
Some people just don't deserve the right to free speech.

"And this is why the album must be rated a 1. Converge cannot even be credited with its creation. Jane Doe is, essentially, an album that was written by no one."
lolwut?
The musical part of this album is amazing and you're nonsensical ramblings can't change that.

Dude, this review is awesome, even if I completely disagree, because it got twenty pages of comments from angry sputnikers. Oh and I actually just bought this album yesterday and it's the only one I have from the band.

My god this was horribly written. There's no cohesive thought to any of this, just a jumbled mess.

THIS. I miss Synch.

I wonder if he'll ever find his way back here. I enjoyed all the drama he caused.

I can only hope. But beyond his pretense and all the hilarious drama he caused, he was actually funny and intelligent when it came to actually talking to him.
|
| |
Yeah dude, he was starting to become not just an angry troll any more, and actually another legitimate user to talk to.
