God, my memory was too kind to this album. It's still got some really great moments (most of Cold Hate Warm Blood, a few of the solos, the chorus to Serpent's Coil), but it is let down by moments where it just lacks any sense whatsoever (the intro of Loathe) and just random bursts of noise.

It's good for sure, people are wayyyyy too generous in scores for albums though. Like, I remember the days when something getting a 9 or 10 outta 10 was crazy rare, yet now unless something is at least that people aren't willing to give it the time of day. This is solid enough, definitely has some great moments, but to give it a 4.5 when the band has three albums that are far better is crazy

I don't care for any individual's ratings, if you'd read the comment and could understand the meaning of it, I was referring to how ridiculous the general critic's mind has got now. I recall, for instance, back in the day when Famitsu magazine had only ever given Gen 5 Pokemon and Demon's Souls a perfect score, and yet now every single game that comes out has to be a 9 or 10 to be worth anyone's time. Take Jedi Survivor for instance, a game that launched with many issues, multiple of which haven't been patched. It launched to 9s and 10s across the board, allowing the publisher to brag about their Metacritic score like it matters. But the problem is now everyone's concerned with averages, and it's stupid. Like, just because an album, game or movie is good, doesn't even necessarily mean it's above a 2/5 if it has huge flaws. Prison Break was a good example, a show with some of the worst acting ever, most contrived hogwash plot ever, and just general suspension of disbelief required constantly, and yet is still just TV junk food.
Dunno man, as someone with 17 years of experience on a critical level, both as a sixth form lecturer and a professional critic, it just bums me out when I see something slightly above mediocrity being held on a pedestal.
