I get that this has some amazing compositions on it and that it nails a certain mood down perfectly, but as a matter of personal preference, theres no tension or anything distinctively gripping here - whereas in their earlier albums there was always this amazing sense of foreboding that hung over every song, this just lacks that extra something to make it anything more than a really well recorded collection of songs.

I have absolutely no clue why anybody says this is campfire music, christian music, or overly happy music. A lot of this album is dark, and only the beginning to Allah sounds campfire-ey at all, and even that intro is a little tongue-in-cheek.

Foreboding is just an atmosphere, and its not as though a single atmosphere is the key to musical greatness. The gripping aspect of this record is the transformation from misfortune and depression, the new interests of Aaron Weiss that delve into philosophical territory rather than sticking to his old metaphors that represented things that plagued him rather then allowed him to feel his full self. Sad music is fine, but its not the only thing that makes the art so enticing.

Concepts/philosophy don't bother me so much, upbeat or not, they're more like icing on a cake. Like I said, musically, nothing here grips me like older albums did, it all just slips and slides with a tad too much ease - I appreciate it and think its a great album, but thats about it.
