I have no idea why everyone loves this album so much. It sounds terribly chaotic and unstructured to me.

I seriously do not understand the way you think when it comes to music. You 5 melodeath albums that are derivative and boring yet when you listen to a genre classic you think it isn't well written.

If this isn't a classic in melodic death metal then really no other album can be.

When I first heard death metal I thought it was chaotic and unstructured too, but after a few days of non-stop listening it finally got to me. Now death metal has become one of my favourite genres.

What got me into extreme metal was Vader's The Beast. Earlier there were only Linkin Parks and SOADS and other Korns...

Ok, I'ma listen to The Gallery again and see if I like it. One think: I don't give a shit if this album came earlier than the newer ones I 5'ed. I care only about how things sound, not what their influence was. I don't play DOOM because it revolutionized the FPS, I play it because it's a fucking swell game.

Slaughter of the Soul is my favorite melodeath album. Generic choice, sue me.

Nay, that's a very solid pick. This and Whoracle are tied as my favourite melodeath albums.

Just listened to The Gallery. A pretty alright album. Not catchy at all, but it's death metal... I understand how you can give it a 5, but it doesn't impress me all that much after the second listen . I have already forgotten most of it. It must be that I heard this album so late, after listening to many newer melodeath albums. But I agree that this album encompasses pretty much all the emotions that DT has been conveying throughout the years. I'll definitely listen to it again.

But for now, The Jester Race over this.

BTW are all those Iron Maiden and Judas Priest albums genuinely worth the well-over-4 rating averages they get? I find that hard to believe. People tend to follow the "respect the classics" trend too much IMO.

I know you're not talking to me, but in the case of Iron maiden, yes they do. Haven't listened to Priest outside of Painkiller

Every album having a 4.5 avg should be automatic instant eargasm. I find many albums with such extremely high averages fall short, while albums around 3.8 - 4.1 usually deliver on all fronts. Weird?
