I just keep thinking to myself, "STOP, just stop already." That's all I've got to say about this album...well that's all I have to say about the band in general.

This should not be rated so highly in my opinion. It is great to see metallica attempt to reconnect with their past sound, but this sounds extremely forced. Everything about this album seems calculated, as if for every song they made sure to find a way to just throw some double kick rolls and tremolo picking just to make sure it was fast enough.

It's a mishmash of all the wrong things from the black album era and not enough of what made metallica great to begin with. Cyanide is a perfect example of this. The verse section is completely black album stuff, with chorus attempting a thrashy sound. While not a terrible song by any means, it just reminds me of how a band truely can lose sight of what was so special about them over time.

Overall, this album is not terrible, but i really think metallica needs to find a sound theyre comfortable writing in. It's as if as soon as they step out of the box theyre accustomed to, their songwriting falls apart. Not every band can explore their creative side and pull it off. Metallica is one of the bands that can write great material without being pretentious artsy snobs. This album IS a step in the right direction though.

For the next album, i personally would love to see three major changes. The production of this album absolutely kills me. I cannot stand it when a band uses the highest quality recording equipment only to ruin it by trying to sound raw. The snare drum sounds completely flat, almost as if the skin isnt tightened completely. The Day That Never Comes exemplifies this. Second, I would really appreciate it if Hetfield stopped adding the "RRahhh" grunt at the end of every held note (seriously, once you notice it, it will annoy the hell out of you), its a very weak attempt at adding an edge to the vocals. Lastly, and probably most important, i would love for a new drummer altogether. Unlike the guitars, which have survived on the fact that incredible riffs don't necessarily require masterful precision, the drums are unique in that without variety they become a series of recycled beats. Rolling the snare 8 times is not a creative transition between verse and chorus.

Sorry for such a long post, I just get so bummed out when i hear moments of a truly fantastic return to glory marred by simple detractors. Maybe asking for a new drummer is asking fo much, but otherwise it would not take much to have made this album great.

I have heard some people talk about the song lengths on DM saying things like "The 8 minutes songs are back!!" Okay, I don't understand that....seeing as The Black Album was the only album to not have a song reach past the 8 minute mark (Kill Em All had The Four Horsemen, 7 minutes in length, thats pretty long lol), it seems the 8 minute songs never left. Load had The Outlaw Torn, Reload had Fixxxer, and St. Anger had what...half the album? lolThis Message Edited On 12.23.08

The entire album would have been a lot better if Kirk took his dick off the wah pedal. I listen to The Day That Never Comes almost every day, it's so good...

^ Only a little less wah would be really necessary, it doesn't really bother me
And I doubt he can make his willy reach all the way to the Wah pedal, he is half-Philippino...though he is also half-Irish apparently

if Lars was actually a competent drummer this would be an awesome album.

Lars is more than competent.....MUCH more than competent, a little more experimentation wouldn't hurt though.

I don't see why everyone has a gripe with Lars' abilities, because he's really a pretty good drummer. There's a lot worse out there.

Even if he was a good drummer (glimpses of And Justice for All), he completely wastes his abilities most of the time for boring and uninspired beats and fills. This Message Edited On 12.25.08

He's definitely not too creative, but the drumming is never where Metallica falls short. Save St. Anger's mindf*ck production...

right, but that doesn't mean it's still a negative about Metallica. I wonder what the drummer for Metallica before Lars was like...

I think way too big a deal is made of Lars' apparent "sub-par" drumming. Sure he isn't Neil Peart but he isn't Meg White either. Mind that all three of them have a style that suits the music they play. There are a lot worse drummers than Lars Ulrich, and while he hasn't really shone since Justice I just don't see anything wrong with his drumming

People are making a big deal because his drumming is in fact sub-par. The rest of the band is way ahead of him with their instrumental capabilities and he seems to have gotten worse over the years instead of better. Anyway, it's a big deal because the drumming on this album gets kinda monotonous because there are no interesting fills thrown in and playing generic speed metal beats while hardly even throwing in a crash every now and then is just lazy.

My point is that Lars could easily be replaced by some mediocre drummer in a middle-aged garage rock band. This Message Edited On 12.26.08

Everything on here drumming wise is better than the snare-fest that was St. Anger (especially Frantic aka the easiest drum song like ever)

I really like the unforgiven 3, I don't think lyrics are as lame as you said in your review (and I also like frantic lyrics).
