Green Day doesnt need to go back to their roots, but they do need to cut the excessive politicalness. It's good to have an opinion, but the same with the Christian right, if all you do is try to force your opinions on people, they'll get sick of you. They ruined WMUWSE with that stupid video.

terrible album, just horrible. i admire that they were willing to go political, but they just cant pull it off... if you want good political punk rock that stays true to punk, listen to rise against, green day sold out tremendously and changed too much. i used to like them, but with american idiot, i dont have a single speck of respect for them anymore because they moved to what i call the super-mainstream, where they write terrible music that appeals to 13 year old kids that think they can be all punk by making american idiot their favorite cd, and all the mindless zombies follow the trend and infect others with terrible music. i could seriously rant on about how much i hate them now, but nobody really wants that, so i'll refrain.

Their best record since dookie imo, but as for being 'political'? Well, in my humble opinion, hating George Bush does not a political band make. And when i saw them live last year, Billie Joe getting the crowd to boo George Bush made me cringe. Cos Bush is quite obviously a baaaad man, like a pantomime villain or something. BOOO.

To slappy...green day are not good lyric writers period. But they are above average melody writers, and that's all I really look for in a song. I don't think they suck, but they have definetley hopped on the bandwagon. I borrowed Dookie and Warning from one of my friends and they were too great albums. I haven't heard this album fully just the singles but, I think American Idiot is a terrible cliched pop-punk song, everything about it is unoriginal. Boulevard of Broken Dreams is pretty catchy but it was overplayed to death. Holiday is alright but it's still nothing to new and shocking, and I haven't heard Jesus of Saburbia yet.
But whats this thing I heard about Green Day saying their better than the beatles? Say it aint so...Hold On off the warning album is the biggest beatle's rip off in history.

This album wasnt as good as previous albums I like many wished they cut down on the political songs - wake me up when september ends really bores me I'm sorry but it is overrated! Holiday and American Idiot I quite liked inspite of all the whinging behind them! Jesus of Suburbia werent bad but you get half way thru the song and think they could end it hear and it would be quite good, but its dragged out and again overrated. The videos to wake me up, and jesus of suburbia really irritate me also! But I loved the St Jimmy song - that is proper Green Day music! Hope they either go back to this sound or call it quits! I couldnt bear to listen to another Billie Joe Emo attempt! also Boulevard of Broken dreams really irritates me too! This Message Edited On 03.04.06

Well, I got this album when it came out because I really liked Green Day's earlier stuff. I had heard 'American Idiot' countless times on the radio, and I didn't like it very much.
So when I purchased the album and listened through it a couple times, I thought it was pretty good, but I found that the song 'American Idiot' just didn't fit with the story. It just sort of stuck out there like, "Hey! I'm the single of this album! Listen to me!"
I started listening to the album, skipping 'American Idiot', and I liked it much better. It's got a very deep story, and the album covers lots of different genre ranges.
So all in all, I'd encourage fans of earlier Green Day to pick this up, but skip 'American Idiot'.

American idiot the single was setting the scene for the rest of the album, America, unhappy people and a controlling media. It does have"im the single your supposed to listen to" written all over it, and to be fair it isnt a great single.

I hope you respect me for not liking them. I was obsessed with them two years ago and I still own all of their albums. After being a die hard fan for about a year straight, I just got tired of them. I hope you can understand that.
...and I never liked this album even when I was a Green Day fan.

Lot of tracks seemed to be 'filler'.. but theirs a few good pts to the CD
Best Track: Holiday

AI - smacks of trying to hard, from a band that made a reputation from not caring too much and jus goofin around - this is why it fails miserably, because it isnt convincing! Jesus of Suburbia and the Video to it make me cringe - why did they feel they had to do this? its beggars belief!

Well this album could be brought to see another political view point and get a better picture across the spectrum of thoughts and ideas.

Luke do you really think the B-52s is better than this? I've heard a few songs off that and they seemed pretty bad.
I thought this album was decent, but if that's a better CD then I'de love for you to explain why. Don't forget to "talk sensible"

Reasons why I don't really like this album:
1) I'm not really a big fan of concept albums in general and I tend to prefer my pop-punk to be relatively concept-free. That doesn't mean I don't like smart pop-punk, I just find that the most "conventional" structures of pop-punk make very rigid concept albums; Everything is too blatantly stated.
2) The "political" notions on the album are pretty generic-- I generally see this as the apex of the Michael Moore-ization of popular music/hollywood and the marketability of the counterculture (which members of refuse to acknowledge). Thus the lyrics sorta irritate me.
3) The songs don't really hold up after repeated listens for me. There are still some great songs on here: "Jesus of Surburbia", "Whatsername", and "Letterbomb", but overall I that don't really grab me the same way they did the first time.
