So many bands doing their best imitation of Blind Guardian, who weren't that great to begin with. I only really like the symphonic variety, like Nightwish and Kamelot.

I always found Blind Guardian to be win, but whatever. Symphonic Power Metal rules too though. Strangely enough it was Nightwish that got me into power metal.

I like BG, I just don't think they're amazing, and they're certainly not a band to base an entire sound off of. Nightwish totally got me into the genre, too. Sadly, it kind of stopped there.

Don't listen to too much power metal myself nowadays, just really Symphonic stuff like you said.

Power metal suffers mainly from the problem that thrash metal did in the late 80's. A couple of luminaries came along and now everyone is riding their coattails. There is some really awesome power metal out there, though. Slough Feg continue to rule the galaxy (though admittedly they're called power metal as a matter of convenience), Dungeon and LORD are totally badass, Lost Horizon are to people who aren't awesome what sunlight is to vampires, and Manowar of course will fucking kill you.

I've heard some great things about Lost Horizon. I'll have to look into them.

I had forgotten how much I like this album. Really great stuff. Bit underrated in the site.

We can thank closed-minded Tarja fans for that. She's an okay singer, but far from irreplaceable.

Really? I though she was fantastic.

I loved her, but she wasn't really that special. Tuomas brought out her voice in the music he created.

^^this. She's decent, and fit the music quite brilliantly, but listening to her solo stuff really shows just how average she is.

'My Winter Storm' was quite dissappointing. I expect her upcoming album to be brilliant. It had better be anyway.

Eh, I really don't. I admit I didn't hear all of My Winter Storm, but what I heard was horribly bland. I just honestly don't think she has it in her to be a songwriter. Plus after I read more into the reasons why Nightwish fired her, I've come to the conclusion that she's kind of a wench. Not that that affects my opinion of her music, I'm just saying...

In a manipulative way I assume?

Pretty much. I'm just thankful Tuomas had the patience not to get rid of her before Once, because that's my favorite album from them.
