imo just listen to one or two of his jazz albums (preferably Nighthawks at the Diner and Foreign Affairs, but it doesn't matter that much tbh) and his entire 80's trilogy + maybe Bone Machine and that's all you really need to know. Waits has a great voice and his best works are excellent but he did repeat himself a lot. A LOT.

yeah i've heard a bunch of singes from his last 5 albums and i got that sense that he didn't change his sound up all that much at a certain point, but even still those albums are held in high esteem. i don't mind if the core formula doesn't change up much as long as the songwriting is strong, and the general consensus says it is. it'll probably take me an entire day to go through the whole discog.
