Eh personally I really struggle to see Counterparts anywhere close to this honestly, it has fantastic highlights but also possibly the most skippable Rush songs after TfE for me.
Then again I admit to be biased to an extent for this one. It's their sad/conflict (can't find the best word) album so it's right up my alley. The opener is really misleading tone-wise, although it's cool that the bookends are so optimistic, must have been intentional.
EDIT: yeah there's Vapor Trails too but musically I dig this one a lot more.

I really like Counterparts, it has some of the best guitar work of their more accessible period. All the songs besides maybe Double Agent are either good or excellent. This is a little more skippable, especially in the second half. I do like the instrumentals though, and Bravest Face is one of their best songs.

I slightly prefer this to Counterparts but I enjoy Vapor Trails a lot more due to the somehow darker atmosphere.
Strangely enough the instrumentals are probably my favs on here, just thinking about them makes me want to spin it again.

And Clockwork Angels is in another league for me, a nearly perfect record. Not to forget Roll The Bones which is also way more interesting as a whole.

Counterparts is good but also problematic for me. I can see great highlights but I struggle to use "interesting" as the album's defining adjective. It rocks, it blends 80s with 90s, it's not painfully straightforward, but it just doesn't win me over completely. Not to mention some awkward lyrics that get me out of the immersion.
"Vapor Trails a lot more due to the somehow darker atmosphere"
Atmosphere-wise I do love say Ghost Rider, but S&A has colours that I can't describe well. Maybe it's the combination of vocals (see 0:30 in Faithless) plus the acoustic foundation of the album. As for Clockwork I think of it as basically S&A but with less of those emotional colours (not zero though!).

The first ~40 seconds of Armor and Sword are one of my absolute favorite Rush sections. And then the poignant Geddy vox, so good.
