"...And Justice for All" was one of their more important albums in my opinion. The criticism over the length of the songs is silly considering the length of most Tool tracks. Overall I would say it belongs in their top 3. I am biased since this album is my favorite by Metallica.

I like that it has longer songs, I just hate the production - the snare is literally over everything else on the album and you can't hear any bass. That's way more important than the songs being too long

Tool actually does more interesting stuff with their long tracks (but even still some songs do go on for a bit too long), but yeah it is the production that hurts this the most. I just feel like with Ride the Lightning the fact they made it concise made them concentrate on each moment harder to make it mean something, and thus makes it more powerful.
This is only 6th or 7th best Metallica for me (depending on how I'm feeling about KEA at the time).

I think the production adds to the album. I like the rawness the album has especially due to the subject matter. Granted the bass should be present, I don't feel the production is that bad. Elliott Smith had albums that were produced cheaply, but he is still considered one of the most important musicians of the modern age.

Tool operates differently than Metallica. There is no comparison in any aspect. The lyrics are a canvas that allows the music, lighting, visuals, and lighting tell the story.

I'm not the one that brought up Tool in the first place, but the point is still valid
|
| |
The point is definitely valid because no one's complaining about the length of the songs in terms of the actual length itself. Whenever someone complains about a song being too long it's almost always because they feel the content of the song doesn't justify the length, which DropTune doesn't seem to get based on his 'but Tool songs are just as long/longer comment'.

I have no problem whatsoever with the song lengths nor do I really have an issue with the production. I love the meatiness of the guitars and vocals. This is probably my favorite Metallica album, even though I don't listen to Metallica much anymore, but this has been the one I return to the most consistently. It's their most musically interesting album and the riffs are thick and heavy like they should be.
