lol you think a guy who starts talking about religious wars in Ireland and ends up rambling about overdoses and mercy killings has better songwriting. What's more objective, that or "riffs harder?"

Idk but for me it is so damn difficult to decide which one is better between RTL and RIP. Both of them are great and landmarks, and that's what really matters.

'but it's more groundbreaking and has better songwriting'

dude! Metallica's first album was the groundbreaking one cuz it was birth of thrash, RIP innovated and re-enegized a declining genre. Plus Marty Friedman was the reason why many wanted to pick up a guitar.

@mifzal Both Kill 'em All and RTL are groundbreaking, how about that? I dunno how accurate the idea that RIP "re-energized a declining genre" is, considering it actually did die off like 3 years later. Pretty sure thrash was going strong until grunge and the black album killed the thrash movement. All the new bands wanted to play grunge and all the existing thrash bands started distancing themselves from it.

thrash wasnt declining in 1990, a lot of absolute thrash classics came out between 90 and 93.
94 is the first year when there werent any insane masterpieces imo

Damn, I cant think of too many heavy powerful riffs as heavy and as powerful as the t/t main riff. The palm muted section in "For Whom The Bell Tolls" levels cities.

it aint dead, just got less popular ... because grunge happened. They are all influential albums, but kill'em all, RIP and Reign in Blood were the groundbreaking albums of thrash. now which one is more groundbreaking is a different debate. But in-terms of songwriting RIP standouts for its complexity and style.
