The new Opeth record was really great. Another album on here that a lot of fans of the band don't seem to like. Especially confusing given that many people apparently thought Damnation was a masterpiece but gave Heritage a 2-3.
I wouldn't say this album is alienating; a lot of hard work went into this and it's meant to be more of an atmospheric approach to their music. I think that the problem here is that it proceeded Ashes (which is my favourite) and people couldn't stand the shift in production

Once you get over the production, this is a gem

The other band I might mention is Genesis, who after being prog legends in the 70's, turned on their fans by going poppy in the 80's.
Bear in mind, I'm talking fan impact (which is fairly objective fact), as opposed to music quality (which is subjective perception).

It was really jarring at first, coming off the back of the pristine Ashes...and took a while to get used to

i love the first 2 tracks, glad you bumped it up from 1.5 cap

i think its their main metal writer, but either way he says that marrow of the spirit is not only the band's best album, but the best album of the 21st century
that's probably the most incorrect statement ever

as i said, dark matter gods is honestly one of the better tracks on the serpent & the sphere and it really pales in comparison to like, anything they've ever done
best track is the astral dialogue though, really good track

It wasn't anything spectacular on first listen; it was just alright. Sure it'll grow though.

i've listened about 15 times and it's grown on me precious little if at all
the structuring of the album just refuses to make sense and every time you feel like you're getting into it you're pulled right the fuck back out again
the interludes are useless, the two longer tracks go fucking nowhere and of the other four tracks only one is very good, one is just good while the others are really underwhelming
and of the two good tracks, you've already heard one of them
so uhh, you're in for one nice surprise at least. the astral dialogue is awesome.

if dark matter gods is any representation of the longer tracks this will be a like a 2/5
celestial effigy was like 3.5/5 pretty good
