Yeah I don't really see a common connector between them beyond being electronic

the way I see it the main thing that separates IDM from ambient techno is the heavily syncopated rhythms influenced by glitch and breakbeat

which would make BoC a very poor example of IDM

Perhaps idm and edm are being debated so much because both are poor descriptors that don't really define anything, especially edm.

i much prefer the term braindance but even that leaves a sour taste.

i describe it to anyone not plugged into the scene as "electronic music that wasn't really made for dancing" lmao

I thought it was agreed on that idm and edm are silly, nonsensical terms and not real genres. However they are all over the place when it comes to categorizing electronic music so I was just trying to see if there was any validity to them someone could prescribe, and the answer is there isn't.

in their defense, pretty much every artist who gets tagged as IDM hates the tag, for the same reasons you just stated.

The whole "dance" part is funny too, like I imagine dancing to these kinds of artists is akin to trying to headbang to Meshuggah.
