"People think trip hop is greater than it was, because Portishead and Massive Attack released absolutely killer albums. And this one is super killer."

I find the opposite to be true. People generally agree with the notion that trip-hop has very little value outside of the big two and maybe Tricky (which counts as 'MA adjacent' anyway). There's a lot more diversity than one may imagine, especially if you consider cross-over downtempo stuff

Lamb, Son Lux (debut), Laika, Esthero, Perry Blake, Hooverphonic, Emancipator, UNKLE, Emilíana Torrini, Sneaker Pimps, Broadway Project and Up Dharma Down have all released either incredible or very enjoyable material - this is a non-exhaustive list, but purposefully substantial as I'm MAKING A POINT or something

Lamb's s/t and Son Lux's 'Walls' in particular are amongst the greatest music ever conceived imo, in fact I prefer both of them to anything MA did

I completely agree, trip hop was great and many of the albums aged pretty well. In addition to Demon's recs, Air's Moon Safari, Bowery Electric's complete discog or the first Morcheeba record are all highlights. I haven't heard Son Lux (will be remedied soon), but Laika is truly awesome.

And there are quite exciting new(er) acts as well, Public Memory is a good place to start with imo.

Ugh. I swear Bowery Electric were part of my list (they are seemingly not). Nice addition(s)!

Missing a few (Alpha, Guitar, Rubio, Mono (the other one), Etro Anime, Kruder and goddamn Dorfmeister, Smoke City, ig DJ Krush, and more) but that's the point innit

people are just used to this site propping up glass canon genres like post metal and americana

That Mono album (Formica Blues) is very sweet indeed!

I either didn't wholly consider some of those trip-hop (K&D, Rubio) even if my list was somewhat vague to start with, don't like them enough (*redacted* hehe) and erm... not sure what 'other Mono' is, hmm nice...

something to check!

oh and ‘Guitar’ is a German shoegazey band. Okay, that one too then!

damn 'Life Is Mono' sounds so familiar (and rather awesome... apparently it was somewhat of a one-hit wonder?) Formica Blues as a whole feels a tad top heavy but enjoying it regardless

this can officially be the designated place for any other trip hop musings, because where else would we put the 'no thread stuff'

a list you say? hmm...

The genre was very slim and the term hung around for a very brief period of time

Trip-Hop was only ever about Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky.

This and Maxinquaye were the albums constantly referred to. Massive Attack the band constantly referred to.

You then had names like Wagonchrist and Rae and Christian floating around but gained nowhere near the mass appeal and that was more hop than trip.

Morcheeba are probably the best example of the extension of what followed but that was more trip-pop.

yeah, in the mainstream I don't think there was much in the way of exposure beyond what people considered the big hitters. I thought Sneaker Pimps were a 'thing' no? I wasn't old enough to remember this happening in real time, but my barometer for such things is usually 'have I heard them discussed irl / does my wife know who they are?' and Sneaker Pimps definitely tick those boxes. Early Goldfrapp is trip-hoppy. Probably a few other people know

I'm going to say this quietly (if necessary) but Morcheeba bore me senseless

then again my wife worked for a local radio station in her youth so this is perhaps an unfair threshold for 'mainstream' (but in the case of Sneaker Pimps, I've heard them mentioned by at least one other person, lol)

Sneaker Pimps again more pop than hop.

Becoming X definitely was a well received and popular album though.

Post Modern Sleaze is a tune.

I've always said it was more that after those first few acts Zak mentioned (the big three) it was more that every band tried to have one or two trip hop influenced songs rather than the market was flooded with trip hop bands (there were some but none found a big audience).

So it's more that Garbage or Bjork or Beck or whoever suddenly had a pop at doing some trip hop material.

yeah I get that, there's not much 'pure' trip-hop out there. It's a great accompanying style which is rarely the dominant force

using one example from above in Lamb's s/t which has a strong trip-hop grounding, it still owes much to dnb, acid jazz, breaks etc. and is a completely different beast to most of the genre's staples

Yeah zak I remember 'Underwater Love'

Even Sneaker Pimps had one break out hit (EDIT: ah yeah you mentioned them already!)

I'd say the ambient mainstream electronic/'chillout' stuff directly stole trip hop's thunder - Air, Royksopp, Zero 7. They took the mainstream side of that market.

Demon - check the Aloof if you haven't, they're sort of classed as trip hop but had house and ambient techno influences among others.

Pure breed trip hop, if that was ever a thing, is extremely rare.
