the first half is pretty much all gas. i don't revisit the second half very much anymore though

Same art, it's a clear nice neat 4.0 to me.
Second half has some nice moments, but it suffers from the aforementioned drag caused by this being too long.

A Shug record cannot be too long Trif. I think that’s the first time you’ve ever been wrong. Probably a typo

@nash: so theoretically, a Meshuggah album could be the length of Daughter of Darkness and you'd still say it's not too long?

Hmmmmmmmm, you might be right nash.
Or maybe I was hacked???? 😰😳😱🤯

Trif is a mystical fairy that randomly breezes into Meshuggah and Opeth threads and just raises everyone's morale

tbh as much as I've turned around and i generally enjoy this stuff now, i still need to be in the right mood and can't really stay on their music for too long before it starts numbing my brain, might just be me but i do need things like ambient/clean sections to break things up sometimes so what i'd usually do is run one album then follow it with something a lot less aggressive. i'd be chasing this with like, idk, for an example autechre or aphex twin

Hell yea Titan love to hear it. I'm convinced these guys can do no wrong.
venin I used think the same until I did a full discog run chronologically. Having an understanding of their progression really made it all make sense for me. These guys are operating on another level and haven't dropped a bad/boring record imo

Correct. Whole discog rips insanely hard.

i did a discog run years ago and just couldn't get into how... mechanical it all felt? it took a while to keep pushing through but once it clicked, it clicked
they carved a good niche for their brand of mechanical, cold, emotionally numb sort of vibes, like for me it's the type of stuff you put on when you just want to feel nothing at all and numb to everything
when there's so much heavy stuff on these albums, i've grown to really appreciate those subtle ambient moments where it all stops for a moment, things like that i've found really accentuate the heavier passages and break up what felt like monotony for the sake of it, and sometimes it's not even a softer section. sometimes it's a really cool lead that just pops up out of nowhere that i notice whenever i'm in the zone.
