don't most hardcore "talliheads" think Ride the Lightning is the real top record anyway?

Yah it usually goes that mainstream people like MOP the most, 'talliheads' think RTL is the best, then there are the thrash elitists that think KEA is the best, then there's other that like AJFA the best. I've basically been all of them at some point

Blackened is Metallica's best opener.

Tbh, the band has a knack for great openers tbh.

I like Ride the Lightening and Master more because of obvious production reasons, also Lars being higher in the mix on this makes it obvious how shitty he is compared to everyone else - especially on tracks like Blackened that call for faster drumming, and there Lars is just going with the motions on one of the most intense Metallica tracks ever. It just bothers the living shit out of me.

BUT it still rules, ALSO DID I MENTION THE PUNISHER TRAILER

I agree with all that haha it's a shame because the songwriting here is masterful

Daww thanks

And I agree, this album has such potential to be one of my favorite thrash albums of all time but there are just a couple things that annoy me too much :/ it's very frustrating because of how much I love the songwriting.

Also, I have this conversation all of the time, but Metallica would be one of my favorite bands ever if they remained more of a band than a business.

this is lars's best performance tho

i've read that lars practiced rigorously for this album, and it's rumored that he hated every second of it and hired bob rock, who would potentially slow the band down so lars could play easier music. not sure how true it is but i'd believe it

This was a legitimately great performance by Lars. Far beyond anything else he ever did.

Maybe I just don't notice him as much on the other records because he's not as fucking loud. And I don't know, I still think songs like Blackened require a lot more and a better drummer could have made that song as heavy as the riffs and James' vocals require them to be.

He's great on Dyer's Eve, though - I'll give him that
