Maybe I'm a big dummy but I finally checked out CoL myself and it just sounded like discount ISIS to me for the most part

I don't mean discount as in bad. It just sounded like they listened to ISIS and were like, "let's do that"

But I just listened to the first half of somewhere along the highway and thats the full extent of my listening

i mean sure but by your logic isis is just discount neurosis then

To be perfectly honest wtih ya, i found ISIS and Neurosis fairly different, as far i can tell

Neurosis seems to be more experimental and doomy while ISIS are more melodic and progressive if you will

Isis and neurosis do not sound that much alike despite people saying that fairly frequently

depends which parts of their discogs you are talkin and since you haven't yet heard either cult of luna's or isis's full discogs yet you might just be surprised

the point is all three bands were simeutaneously forming post-metal as we know it. sure, they fed off each other and shared influences but calling one of them a cookie cutter derivative of the other is pretty reductive

No doubt neurosis laid the ground work. ISIS definitely forged their own sound imo though. Kinda funny. I hate being that guy that doesn't pay homage to genre founders or whatever but I just can't really get into neurosis. I enjoy isis a lot more

I'll check out more CoL. As I said, my opinion comes from basically hearing 2/3 of one of their albums

i enjoy isis more as well for the most part but that doesn't make me respect neurosis any less

Their sound is in a more straight forward approach it seems, Neurosis takes more time to grow, the only two albums i'm currently digging and listening are Souls At Zero and Through Silver In Blood

Will check out. I just went with the highest rated one here. I was planning on checking their other stuff but I'll start with that one on my next morning work drive
