it took me several years to get my head around appraising this as a post-metal album instead of a black metal album and then it more or less clicked

"Ashes is almost perfect except the first iteration of our fortress is burning sounds like amateur meandering"

Lol, I've had Our Fortress is Burning I as my ringtone for like a decade now (it's always on silent regardless). I think the meandering is pretty perfect. Sort of a wandering instrumental

Honestly I'm all for more amateur meanderings. Life is too Polyphia these days.

Take that and think of the closing minutes to Fire Above, Ice Below. It seemed pretty clear that these dudes loved extended instrumental breaks where they could just jam. Seriously, playing the Fire Above, Ice Below closing riff is super easy but hypnotic once you get going.

...& our fortress is burning & we had to tend to the flames (hence temporarily forgetting to play our instruments properly for a bit there -0.5)

Not Unlike The Waves heavy ass riff is living rent free in my head rn (since this was bumped), so I may as well be jamming it in reality lol

I hate how the vocalist nerfed his range to the ground in order to do the one-tone cartoonish voice.

Bassline with a bad take, shocker!

I still stand by the opinion that there are no bad takes. I'm definitely hearing cartoonish but not in aggravating amounts (if you want a really cartoonish voice check how Matt Tuck sounds this year).
