I enjoy Opeth immeasurably more now I’m 40 than I ever would have as a teenager. If I would have listened to Orchid back when it first came out I would have absolutely hated it.
Blackwater Park 2001? I’d have thought it was absolutely useless.

It could have been overplaying, but then again I've probably heard MAYH the most and that one doesn't even show signs of wear at all. Perhaps MAYH, Morningrise and GR are a little more eclectic/adventurous than BWP or Still Life, so they hold up better? I don't know.
And agreed zak, tastes change and nothing is forever.

I fell in love with these guys at 14 when I heard BWP and this one for the first time thanks to my nephew (who was like 22 and so way cool). They were my favorite band for years before falling off when I was in my early twenties. Yet now they're making a resurgence for me, even though I'm not as obsessed with them as I used to be.

Yeah that's a beautiful example.
Super nerdy, and it's asking WAAAYYY too much from this old fossil of a website, but I wish Sput tracked your rating history with albums, that it made graphs of how your rating changed over time. It'll never happen though...

Too much of a faff about trif dude.
I’d liken this band to a massive tangle of knots. Their 10+ minute songs that seemingly go nowhere on first listen definitely require patience. Once it all gets untangled the music is ridiculously satisfying.
I think my main case for this is BWP. People harp on about Leper Affinity and the t/t like they are unmatched masterpieces and for a few years I really couldn’t see it at all. Massive case of ‘this if anything is dull, underwhelming and uneventful’
Still can’t untangle this album at the minute though, it’s just too processed and really does seem to be too much of a dirge. Funnily enough it’s exactly what I thought of BWP so time will tell.

It'll be alright I think zak. The first four tracks here are absolutely golden.
I'd still be interested to see those graphs man, haha, although you're absolutely right and they would take up so much of your time.

Every song here is gold.
Hopefully it grows, Zak.

what did I rate this again [edit: seems fair]

I don't understand why Master's Apprentices gets some flak though. These riffs are monstrous and really satisfying

Guess I have to give this another spin soon. This could be their And Justice For All

"This could be their And Justice For All"
actually a v good take, though unlike AJFA the drumming is a highlight here
also unlike AJFA this isn't pigshit, but they defo share a few drawbacks

I really liked Master's Apprentices when I first got into them, but it grew off of me a little. First three are among their best work I think, and For Absent Friends is gorgeous.

Master's Apprentices is the weakest cut on here in my opinion.

Master's Apprentices is great for all of 2 minutes, then the rest kinda happens

I kind of revisit their discography now with these discussions (avoiding the first two for the time being) and this is exactly where I remember it. Sounds a bit by the numbers, although enjoyable. Maybe the ideas it has don't work for me, but this time it truly shows how Mikael composes a song: riff x 4

This is easily the weakest metal album Opeth ever wrote and only superior to the dregs of their discog (Pale Communion and Sorceress) overall. I’ll give this another go some day, but I struggle in motivating myself to revisit it, which is quite damning. A lot of these riffs overstay their welcome and the production is ass (the remaster is a mild improvement but still sub-standard).
If anything I’m probably overrating this.

Btw, if I should mention ICV here, I think it kept the song orientation found on their ''new era'', while channeling the complexity which was absent from the majority of PC and completely on Sorceress.
However, I still like the fun approach of Sorceress, so I'd rate it over Deliverance. Sometimes I wonder if I should rate Sorceress over PC as well, as it's becoming more and more boring to listen to it, save for some songs (Eternal Rains..., River, Faith in Others)
Edit: It seems like I've already given Sorceress a higher rating. Oh well...

Yes Eternal Rains is SO good. Incredible track. I still think Sorceress is their absolute low point, both songwriting and production wise.
I liked ICV, should revisit ASAP. In fact, I'll do so tomorrow during work.

Sorceress, Pale Communion and Ghost Reveries are the only ones I find boring for the most part. Rest rules!
