Well, this didn't do anything for me at all. For all the cool instrumentals, the vocals totally killed it for me - amateurish, off-key... they even manage to sound pretentious.

I can see that. It threw me off the first time how “emo” the vocals actually sound. Now the amateurness just makes it sound more real and impactful tbh. Goes for just about every aspect of the record probably

How do vocals sound "pretentious"?

I know the “is this jazz” argument a couple pages back is old but I thought it was interesting bc Tony Driver himself said he didn’t like considering any of his works jazz because none of it is improvised - at least up until some later Kayo Dot records maybe.

Eh. Wish I liked this more. A lot of the supposed "beauty" of this album fails to strike a chord with me. The softer, calmer sections feel meandering and outright pointless and sometimes don't transition too smoothly into the more aggressive parts of the album. The songwriting just feels very disjointed, but maybe that's the point. Either way, it's kind of annoying.
I guess I prefer the heavier sections, but even then I could get that from any half-decent death metal band.
I'll try out LYBM and Choirs, I guess. Not very excited after listening to this, however.

The quieter sections are amazing, but I understand thinking the transitions to and from the metal parts are kind of jarring. Part the Second doesn’t have any of those qualities imo, basically perfect.
