they seem to be quite creative and productive, too. Many songs on the way

@Beardog oh god, it works too well haha

I have the biggest soft spot for this album. Blasteroid, Stargasm, The Sparrow... yeah, don't get how this underwhelmed people. Every track has something amazing in it.

In 2011 I got to listen for the first time albums by Opeth and Mastodon. Both Heritage and Hunter got a huge backlash, but I happened to enjoy them, free from the burden of their previous work.

The Hunter rocks hard and has some of the greatest moments from Mastodon (e.g. the part where Troy screams ''Just clooose your eyeeeeeeeeeees... Let me teeeell you that everything's fiiiiiiiiiiiiinneeee'')

Early opeth and mastodon suck my balls, especially Opeth. It's a crime to have them tagged as "death metal". They're just bad and pretentious prog rock with harsh vocals thrown into the mix...

It's not that bad, haha. It's a matter of preference, but I agree, I dig Opeth from Still Life and on.

My first experience with Mastodon was in 2009 with CtS. The whole place was buzzing with their new album. I bought it and i remember i didn't like it at first. But the reason i didn't like it was because i was listening without headphones; CtS is one of the few albums out there that is a whole lot better when listening via headphones. There's so much stuff going on. I think it's easily Mastodon's best record. It pisses on their previous albums.

"They've been working on new stuff. Hopefully a full album in the near future"

Hopefully, it would be a bouncy and poppy record with a little bit of jazz 'n' country thrown here and there. And moar of those hillbilly vocals, please.

Fuck this metal shit.

CtS was an apocalypse for me as well. I would jam it literally ALL DAY for months. But I like all of their albums, even Remission (which is too harsh for me) has some amazing stuff.

I wouldn't mind that, tbh

I know YOU wouldn't mind. But a lot of people want to hear the same junk recycled over and over again. That's why a lot of people would be pissed, hahaha

Personally, I would like to see that just to see sputnik being pissed once more.

Nah, I think the userbase here is a lot more open-minded than we give it credit for. I remember the days of Metal Hammer GR forum, where operatic vocals in metal were considered A BLASPHEMY and that metal should be left PURE (of course not by all, but I can remember some strange guys thinking like that)

I bet most of these guys would suck Halford's balls. It's weird to have such objections. Operatic vocals in metal are as old as metal itself.

Don't vow on it. Take a look at the forums. Most people criticize the fact that they don't play metal in the vein of their first days.

Early Mastodon and Opeth rule tho

@rockandmetaljumkie dunno why you're singling out early Opeth as being more prog than death, post Still Life Opeth was like that too.

I don't have an appropriate answer tbh, it's just the way i perceive their music. They just sound more like a prog band with death vocals to me

Yeah, I agree that they're definitely more prog metal w dm influences than pure dm. But they've *always* been like that is what I'm saying. All the way from Orchid to Watershed.

"CtS was an apocalypse for me as well. I would jam it literally ALL DAY for months."

I remember my iTunes play count for CtS being like 1,800+ while still at school that year. so for seven tracks, that was the whole album three times a day for four months.
