I say this a lot, but Morningrise has To Bid You Farewell, which is their best song, so it always gets a high ranking.

Yeah, To Bid You Farewell is head and shoulders above any other song they've produced.

The reason why their first three albums were so good is that they were still attempting to make a name for themselves. Nowadays they can record Akerfeldt pooping into the mic and it will get at least a 4/5. Their ego has noticeably affected the quality of their work.

This actually surprises me for some reason.

Understood, but I totally disagree with this.

If you look at the atmosphere on Morningrise or MAYH it is so much thicker and more believable than on Still Life or this album.

Even as a Prog fan, I prefer mid era Opeth to anything. Even though BWP and GR are my faves, the ones that come after would be MAYH, MR, SL, the rest. Watershed and Deliverance are both around 4, maybe 3.5's. Those two are probably their worst albums, and even Orchid beats them. I definitely think their pretty much the best band on the planet right now, even when they are their worst, they are head and shoulders above many others.

Deliverance is their worst, followed by Watershed. Damnation was nice because it changed things up, and Windowpane is a fantastic song.

Yeah, Damnation is excellent. They proved that they can do something completely removed from metal and still have it

be awesome. Now, Crysis, you being a black metal doesn't surprise me that you like their first three albums the best,

but despite their early work being awesome, this album really puts a modern twist on the black-ish sounding death

metal they did before. It has Mikael's best melodies, its the most cohesive Opeth, it has their best song, and it's diverse

enough to show off Opeth's ambition without taking away too much of Opeth's strictly grandiose death metal roots.

I think that's a big part of it, and like someguest pointed out I think the rawer production helps with power of the finished product.

Some people do say that the rawer production helps power an album.......I actually agree with that most of the time, but this is the best of anything Opeth has ever done. it's the perfect combination of their slightly flawed, grandiose/layered approach of melodic death metal with the slightly flawed, sometimes-to-ambitious prog stylings. It's not to disjointed, and it's not too ridiculously experimental for what Opeth can handle. Perfect in my eyes. And yah, Morningrise was my number one Opeth album for a good few months. Check my original account, it may still be 5'd on there.

My biggest problem with this album is, unlike most people, I don't like the first two tracks and title track. Tracks 3-7 are great, though, especially The Drapery Falls, my second favorite Opeth song.

But at least Morningrise has Advent.
