"this is such a lol take considering CC has like 75% forgettable material"
Context is key. They make the fans very happy, even if it seems "forgettable" to some. They clearly enjoy doing it too, because they're still going strong as ever. To me that's far better than releasing something memorably bad and alienating your core fans, which has happened MANY times.
I'm so sick of bands building a following for a certain sound, doing something completely different, then acting incredulous and snobby when people don't like it. If you wanna experiment that's fine, but do it under a different title. That's like walking into your favorite movie theater, only to discover they've removed the screens and turned it into a hardware store. Is the hardware store bad? Not necessarily. In fact some former moviegoers might prefer the change. But they've brought you in under false presumptions. It's not unfounded to take an issue with that. Just my unnecessary two cents lol

Cc has had consistent riffs and grooves since before it was cool to have riffs and grooves. Even their weaker albums have incredible tracks L take

yeah row it's an absolute epidemic i agree bands should just stick with what they know and accept that their fanbase dictates their growth, that's what keeps music moving forward!

Bands can do what they want, but they shouldn't act surprised when there's backlash. I also wanna point out that very seldom do bands change their sound for the better. They're typically making albums like Cold Lake, Illud Divinum Insanus, The Unspoken King, The Path of Totality, Load, etc. My view is if you're a death metal band, but suddenly you wanna make an r&b album, you should do it under a different name. If you choose not to, don't be surprised if people bash you for it.

A cosmic death metal band making a cosmic ambient album is not the same thing as a death metal band making an r&b album and I’d like to think you can understand the difference row my boy
Also, can you point to where BI or Paul riedl “acted surprised” when timewave zero got poor reception in the metal sphere? As far as i know they’ve just kept doing their thing, played one ambient show when it came out and then have been successfully touring their DM material ever since. Never understood the hangup, and always thought people projecting this thing of “don’t act surprised” was them being uncomfortable with the change/reception, not the artist themselves

writing consistently good riffs for nearly 30 years is better than basically 98% of musical acts that have ever existed. who cares why they do it.
|
| |
No CC hate from me just to be clear bruv, i respect what they do and appreciate consistency too. Both can exist simultaneously athough i know you’re not specifically saying they can’t

oh yeah I was responding to the “making music for the fans” comment
