I'll take Turtleneck over Born to Beg any day

A very good one. Have no idea why it didn’t click with me over the years.

This is the last really great record they had.

i do wish side a was a little less patchy but when this hits its unbelievable

though this hangs together the better of the two, knowing a bunch of iaetf songs (the better ones no less) were written when they were making this makes both albums degrees of more frustrating
get the earlier versions they were playing live of quiet light, rylan, so far so fast, and pull of you they were playing live on here in place of the weakest cuts and theyd have been absolutely cookin here but the iaetf versions have all kinda been too workshopped to work

Colton have you ever heard Larry Carlton’s solo in Kid Charlemagne?
|
| |
You mean to tell me that Steely Dan isn't the one playing guitar?
|

Nobody Else Will Be There is one of the best songs they've ever done
And then the rest of this mostly sucks

hit or miss... kind of an awkward middle ground between their classic era and the new bullshit they're putting out now

Born to Beg is the real stinker here

then you have stuff like I'll Still Destroy You which is one of their very best songs

Guilty Party is the best here, so glad that they didn't try to get too fancy with it
|
| |
do i actually try to get into this or just passively dismiss them as boring like i did in 2018 when i was coping over some of my fav albums getting bad averages
|
| |
this is a weird point to jump in with them, though ig it is one of their most aesthetically diverse. you'd probably have better luck with the comparatively raw style on Alligator and maybe even Sad Songs. maybe the Cherry Tree ep if you want a briefer litmus test
|
| |
yea i'll keep that in mind, thanks johnny, cherry tree i could prob queue up after i run through victory over the sun's discog

Don’t jump in on this [2]
Alligator or Cherry Tree are the canon starting points, but Trouble Will Find Me is my oddball pick as starting point, especially for people (do we still say normies?) who might be allergic to some of the louder moments in their earlier discog
|
| |
the louder moments might resonate with me more i've always found with like indie-rock adjacent stuff, I need a little more energy in spots. if everything's like a song like Breezeblocks by Alt-J I'll probably fall asleep
