It's ok, guy
Give it a try, and you'll like
There have been a lot of albums in your life that you never fully soaked, you just flocked with the sheep and put it down because it was "too mainstream"
Here's what I suggest doing this weekend: Put this compact disc in your stereo, put a glass of milk on the bedside, press play on the stereo, lay in bed, close your eyes, and soak every cut on this record in. Once the ever-so-incredible "Oh No" ends, replay the album in its entirety. That is a soak session.
come back on here Monday and let me know how you like this album, after you've finally listened to it in a soaky-manner
Thank you.

Do you ever drink the milk or is it purely for aesthetic?

I know people hate the sound they used for "That's the Spirit," but I find the premise for a majority of complaints to be baseless. Just because someone is not using their original sound does not qualify the record as bad. That's like saying because an individual is not wearing the same shirt they wore yesterday is a sell out. I can admit "Throne" is a terrible song and "Blasphemy" is a filler track, but I don't see an issue with the album otherwise. "That's the Spirit" has flaws, but it shines in every other aspect. It's experimental, well-spoken, and a step forward.

Throne is one of the better tracks on here; along with Doomed, Avalanche, Run, Drown, True Friends, and Happy Song.

"Throne is one of the better tracks on here" -Sempiturtle
"Throne" is arguably one of their worst tracks for many reasons. One in particular would be the excessive use of backing vocals both live and in studio. I don't blame Oli Sykes for relaxing on certain songs to save energy for the closing tracks during a live performance, but "Throne" barely uses any of his vocals. Not to mention the sound is generic and doesn't provide any use aside from mass appeal. The lyrics are also quite a step down when comparing them to "Doomed," "Avalanche," and "What You Need." There aren't a lot of saving graces for "Throne."

Metacritic is reliable only for video game reviews. For music not at all
Heard this album and the result is the sam. I couldn't tolerate any of the material, most of this album feels more like an attempt of oliver to make a 30STM album. Here it seems that he was consuming tranquilizers and sedatives for horses. Tracks like follow me and oh no are offensive as shit and the worst thing is that it seems he wants to continue with this pact. I mean I disliked in the past other BMTH albums but after a few more listens the result was much more pleasent and fun, here I was bored to death

Nice little album this is.
Lot of nice, moist cuts on this album.

"Follow You" is a very sarcastic song. I thought it was one of the better tracks since it is supposed to parody the typical 'pop love song' formula. The music video makes it blatantly obvious, yet many fans view it as a love ballad. I'll give you some leeway on "Oh No," but Europeans enjoy that sound for some reason. I see no similarities to 30 Seconds to Mars on this album. 30 Seconds to Mars hasn't sounded anywhere close to "That's the Spirit" since their debut record. Aside from that, 30 Seconds to Mars plays between the pop and alternative spectrum on their current material. Bring Me the Horizon has a very atmospheric approach to "That's the Spirit" while Thirty Seconds to Mars has a more prominent approach to their instrumentals. I can admit a similarity to Linkin Park because of the nu-metal influence Bring Me the Horizon incorporates, but otherwise the actual record doesn't share many similarities to Linkin Park in anyway.

Sempiternal had more similarities with linkin park and deftones than this, the atmospheric approach of that album and Oliver's vocal style share certain similarities with some nu metal bands, even the intro of can you feel my heart is similar to the intro of lost in the echo. With the exception of throne I don't see a big influence of LP here, the atmospheric approach in this record is minimal and it feels more like and alt rock album made by 30 stm and some songs felt like something lazy crafted by many pop punk bands of the past decade. Tried to listen this and the result was the same

Nothing they've ever done was remotely similar to Deftones.

Hospital of souls has some influence of deftones, of course is very subtle. Still sempiternal had more LP elements that's for sure

"Hospital for Souls" is a bit of a stretch, but I get your general point. Deftones took a big risk incorporating shoegaze into their sound, but it paid off extremely. 30 Seconds to Mars, at least in my opinion, doesn't quite fit the mold to this album. Again, I could see comparing a track like "Buddha for Mary" to something in this album, but regarding their newer material, there are some differences. Linkin Park was a prominent influence upon Oli Sykes, so there will always be some homage to them in Bring Me the Horizon's work. Upon mentioning pop-punk, I was surprised I wasn't the only person who saw pop-punk influence in "That's the Spirit." I don't hate pop-punk. I think if done right it has a really broad range. I found it interesting Bring Me the Horizon would incorporate elements from that genre into "That's the Spirit."
As far as laziness goes, I can't say there was no effort into this installment. Objectively speaking, the album was supposed to be an experimental one. Regardless of personal taste, "That's the Spirit" accomplished its goal of allowing Bring Me the Horizon to experiment with modern sounds. One could argue that the reliance on backing vocals is a flaw in this album, but I feel that "That's the Spirit" made up for those flaws in lyrical quality.
