start with Illinois [2]

I dunno, my thing is if you start with Illinois you’ll be less likely to go back to Michigan and Seven Swans, which are definitely worth checking out. If you’ll like Illinois, you’ll like Michigan, so you might as well work from there on forward.

Just start with Illinois and then stop, because it's really his only consistently great album.

Woo hot take there. I adore Illinois, but I actually find it somewhat inconsistent, especially first half compared to the second half.

Yeah, it's weird cuz it's got a thousand tracks, but I still think it's his most consistent.

For me it varies from listen to listen. Sometimes I can do the whole thing top to bottom no issue, sometimes I hit Casimir Pulaski day and that’s all I really need.

I think Illinois has better songs, but this is a better overall album, if that makes sense.

Illinois is where I started and it failed to get me into him at the time. Chicago is one of his very best songs, though.

This album is a bad first entry because it makes his earlier songwriting seem weaker. Imagine hearing Seven Swans after this record, it's bound to be underwhelming.

True never thought of it like that.
I'm with luci under the condition that wherever you start, you continue with the discography to see the progression. It will reward you, don't give up.

there is no way Seven Swans is going to be a let-down. by which i mean that there is no way that Seven Swans is going to be a let-down no matter what; just genuinely lovely and achingly earnest, proof u don't need trimmings. You are the Blood is the first Sufjan song i heard and remains one of my favourites in his entire discog, but my next step (Illinois) didn't disappoint but rather made me marvel at his versatility

I love Seven Swans but I disagree with that Wines. C&L is a more fleshed out and listenable version of Seven Swans, so backtracking would be the equivalent of having a chocolate milkshake and then someone just offering you milk.

Now that I say that I got chills. I remember going into B&N to physically buy a copy of C&L when it came out. It felt like yesterday. But now that's so long ago. I was dating a different girl and lived in a different city. Jesus. C&L is still "New" Suf to me.
