God smack and Iron Gland kind of suck, yeah.

It always amuses me when people diss Iron Gland, like it's supposed to be a real song. It's a joke track that (I think is kinda funny, and) lasts merely 45 seconds. Why is this such a problem?
Also, God Smack is the bomb. Not the best on here, but still a good song.

because it's a pointless little excursion that detracts from the gritty vibe the album exudes. it's a little bit of a mood killer

It's a brief moment of levity in an otherwise crushingly depressing album, and one of the few moments in the band's discography (the only others I can think of are 'Swing on This' and 'Love Song') where the personalities of the band's members shine through the image created by their music. As such, I kind of enjoy it.

I should probably call the album 'grim' rather than 'depressing'.

I'm pretty sure Iron Gland is supposed to represent like a dream sequence or something

How does Iron Gland represent levity? I always thought it sounded just as dark and grim as the rest of the album

Despite God Smack's subject matter, I think that song sounds more uplifting musically than Iron Gland does

it's because of the story behind the track, not necessarily because of how it sounds

"don't like the vocals on that one"
Dude the vocals on "God Smack" are what make it such a standout.
"Rain When I Die" and the t/t are tied for best though.

The riff in the song was one that Cantrell wanted to put in a song for the album, but the rest of the band hated the riff, so they recorded it as a joke track. There's no deeper meaning behind it; it's just a rather elaborate practical joke.

So therefore the levity is not about the uplifting nature of the song per se, but about the fact that in the midst of writing a practically biographical account of Layne Staley's spiral into drug addiction, depression and eventual death, they were still a bunch of regular dudes who could joke around with each other and have fun. It makes the whole affair more relatable and human, I think.

You know when you swallow, your adams apple goes up? Practice trying to use your muscles to hold it up. Then try to sing.

Iron Gland sounds pretty funny to me, it literally has Tom Araya (I think) going RED RUM, RED RUM, RED RUM.
I mean the riff's dark but the vocals are pretty tongue in cheek.
