That’s not my point. My point is it has been out for a day and your claim of it being lifeless is a bit rash. How many times can you have listened to it already? Your opinion of an album has never changed after the release date?
And yes, the albums that are the defining genre albums of the decade are trending toward mid-tempo over the last decade or so (e.g. influenced by the current popularity of death doom in death metal). Whereas in other decades, such as the 80s and 00s, the collective pull was towards being the fastest, the most brutal, or the most technical. Antithetically, in the mid to late 90s you saw bands slow things down as groove influences became more ubiquitous. There are waves and trends in music. To deny that is absurd. I did not state that every single band was or is putting out mid-tempo music.

'How many times can you have listened to it already?'
4 and a half the half because it was as lifeless as the first time which was 10 minutes after it dropped

yeah not feeling the new one, definitely seems restrained (neutered?) and overly reliant on it's repetitive structuring to invoke some sort of atmosphere (I guess that's the attempt?), with some sections overstaying their welcome considerably. Very little in the way of interesting musicianship/dynamics. Even the percussion is mostly mid-tempo and rather bland.
Unremarkable, ordinary, unexciting, (dare I say)... generic? Damn.

The solos feel less appropriate the more I hear them. Like someone seasoned the songs with Guitar Center. Whose dad is this? Just a track like The Fires of Frustration off of Furnaces is more interesting than much of the new record, and that's to say nothing of creative peaks of theirs like Shrine of Mad Laughter or Synarchy of Molten Bones or Abscission or the Kenoses.
Kinda fuckin disrespectful that it takes 15 mins for a blast beat to kick in. And when it comes in it SNEAKS in. It doesn't knock you tf over like it should. Not mad at them for modifying their sound, I just wish they would've done something cooler about it. Where are all the left turns? They've even done so many more effective slow songs, like 1523 also off of Furnaces. They used to throw every fucking thing at a song like only they could and now they had a kind of epiphany where they thought "lets always play in 4/4, slowly, for 8 mins at a time, with no extra touches, barely any change ups, weeee tack on some guitar solos" Like they thought they were being innovative by axing a lot of what made them feel unique.
Maybe they felt that so many people have been ripping them off that they decided to rip off some regular ass bands. And it's weird that they would sacrifice heaps of post modern, angular, otherworldly, and mind warping dissonance for goddamn rock n roll-isms. The former is just more affecting imo. Strange to think of newer bands like Ad Nauseam flat out showing them tf up with their last record, to the point of no comparison. The Long Defeat is actually a perfectly solid album when thinking of black metal in general, but DsO specifically could do so much more it's not even funny.

This is all pretty much on point, but x 100 here...

absolutely not what I (or anyone?!) was looking for from DSO.

New record is a disappointment... And this is coming from a HUGE DsO fan. They pulled a Enslaved on me... Not cool

yeah i dont think it's terrible, but it is a disappointment. here i was thinking the band would never release anything mediocre (not including the first two albums cause those kinda suck)

I actually like their debut quite a bit. Their sophomore is their weakest imho. New one never fully takes off. Its got some nice parts in the first three tracks but the rock and roll sections are just plain weird and bland for DsO standards. They got this mexican noir rock and roll rhythm thing that sincerely makes me chuckle... The most memorable part of the whole album is the ambient ending of the first track imho.

Yeah, it’s just frustrating cause you know what they can do. Like you can’t be impressed by Usain Bolt running 20 mph when you’ve already seen him do 30. I did like that outro. Wish they would have added more noise transitions or something.

As I'm listening to the album right now its getting worse and worse... And it's not even a bad album but like @MillionDead said this band has shown us they are capable of so much more it's not even funny... Midway during the third track there is a glimpse of "Si Monumentum" riffing that ends up atmospherically dragging... So sad man... I guess 2022 couldn't have it all.

Sounds like a deathspell album to me. Matbe a little slower and more melodic. I don't know what everyone is hearing lol

95% of the new album is just mid tempo swirling guitarwork with mediocre harshes over it.

I've always thought they do slower, melodic sections really well. Actually, I've said before that I wanted them to do an album like that lol

It's not terrible or anything. I could see myself spinning Our Life is Your Death every once in a while. It works on a post-punk kinda level. I can't tell if the leads are cheesy or just catchy now. If I stop trying to expect the feral sounding Deathspell I've come to love and try to appreciate it on the level of something like Interpol, it feels better. lol

an Interpol lol, I enjoyed that
also funny because Interpol are occasionally great, often mediocre. Ignoring the weird cross-genre comparison, you certainly shouldn't aspire to be like Interpol.
