Even so, how an album charts really has little to do with how popular they are in the mainstream. As I Lay Dying gets into the top 10 but 9/10 people, prob more, will have no clue who they are. Its just dedicated fans buyin the albums, and dedicated metal fans tend to probably be on the fringe.

Yeah the correlation between sales and popularity isn't as big as you might think, I mean a band like Genesis has sold a bazillion records but you don't hear them mentioned nearly as much as other bands from that era

Madonna has sold more records than Pink Floyd or The Rolling Stones, and who gives a shit about her these days? Nobody

Genesis got most of its sales from its 80s shit after Peter and Steve left. They were selling out stadiums no problem back
then. I still hear their pop singles all the time on radio.

I just meant compared to Led Zep, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, anyone... they are played and talked about less, despite being as successful commercially

Well cuz Genesis had a different career path. They got more popular when they were shittier unlike Floyd and Zep who were popular and good. Basically most casual listeners probably only know Genesis from their 80s stuff. Which is why you dont hear much of their prog shit on the radio but you'll hear Zeppelin and Floyd constantly. Genesis is right there with them quality wise but it just never gets played. Weird.

Floyd and Zep had more hooks into their songs. Early Genesis was just less accessible I guess. Patrick Bateman explains it pretty well.

Those guys are legends though. Anyway, Genesis is fairly popular where I'm from. I guess it might depend on who you talk to.

There have been 3 artists who have sold over 100 million albums both as a solo artist and as a member of a band.
Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney are 2. Whose the third?
