Ah yes I forgot about that (not the biggest Bowie fan). But my point was (and still is), basing an album on the concept of a novel doesn't necessarily make an album any less original.

I mean it's not like the lyrical themes explored on Dark Side had never been written about before.
Both are lyrically fantastic though so this is a pointless debate.

while i love animals, the lyrics aren't among the album's stronger qualities. i've just never found them nearly as interesting as some of their other records.

I've grown to appreciate the lyrics on Animals the most out of any Floyd album (The Final Cut's lyrics are a close second) but I also love the lyrics on here. I feel that this album's lyrics make a more immediate impact, at least for me anyway, but they don't fascinate me as much as they used to.

"this does have any colour you like, literally, this album is a fucking rainbow"
totally. was just saying earlier that that might actually be my fave song on here. so beautiful, and made in like '72?? The fuck
And PS - Roger wrote the lyrics obvi loosely based on Animal Farm but he did change it up quite a bit. One major difference is that the Dogs in the novel are communists, and in the album they are capitalists (showing Roger/Floyd's anti-capitalistic viewpoints).
Dark Side's lyrics are relatively common concepts but they were done so on purpose. Plus it's pretty much a concept album for the total experience of modern life. That's some fucking deep shit.

Edited my previous comment. It looked a bit like I was contradicting myself.

Yeah I love how this can be interpreted as each song representing a different stage of life, from birth to death. When I first had that pointed out to me I was like WHOA

I find the lyrics to Animals to be a bit cheesy and preachy. They are great and definitely hold up to
this day on the critiques of how our society is obviously tiered, but DSOTM holds up because it
applies on a personal level rather than being based on our world we are part of. It just makes it that
much more intimate, even 40 years later I'd say there are very few people who can't relate to anything
that album has to offer. It's just so transcendental

Hard not to relate to Animals' lyrics either, but I know what you mean

Its so chilling and beautiful. The back story according to an interview with Waters is that the band flew Clare Torry into the studio, showed her the piano melody and just said "Its a song about death... just sing over it"

Apparently she walked out after her take and was all embarrassed like "I'm sorry for that"
What a cutie

@guitarded she put so much emotion into it that I could imagine being embarrassed after doing something so ballsy
@Mad. '"FORWARD!" HE CRIED, FROM THE REAR AND THE FRONT RANK DIEEEEEEEED'
I can just imagine that scene in battle a few hundred years ago... such vivid imagery. The piano in the middle of the song blows my mind even harder though

yeah the backstory to great gig in the sky is great...roger was like "we don't really have any lyrics written, and we're not sure what words we want sung but here's a melody, just have a go at it"
yeah clare was embarassed like thinking she had gone way too over the top but the band was all like holy shit that was great
that song is immortal
