I still have tons of respect for Painkiller. It's technical display is undeniable and, as you say, it is one of the biggest examples of a comeback for a band that old.
It just bothers me how forgotten 70's Priest seems to be (I'd say 9 out of 10 "metalheads" know nothing of the band before British Steel) and how even the band themselves seem to neglect their older material in favor of their new stuff (there are no live recordings of Run of the Mill even if it is one of the band's best songs, c'mon)

"even the band themselves seem to neglect their older material"
Dude, you should know, the material you play live must be very specific. There are songs that work as live material and there are songs that doesn't. The majority of the people go to concerts to hear the hits, they're are not interested about songs they do not know.
"I'd say 9 out of 10 "metalheads" know nothing of the band before British Steel"
About that. Keep in mind most people call themselves "metalheads" so that they can be part of a bigger group. To belong somewhere. Sure, they like the music but that doesn't necessarily mean they sit down like you and me and invest hours and hours listening songs all day long, analyzing every single note and phrase like we do. Like it or not, we belong in the minority. And that's what makes it so special and appealing to me.
Also, i really don't give a damn if a song, a band, an album, or whatever, gets wide exposure. If it's special to me that's all that matters.
"It just bothers me how forgotten 70's Priest seems to be"
It's for the better. It makes it all the more valuable and also adds to the whole mystic.

I suppose, but that doesn't make it any less of a sad circumstance for me lol

That's a pretty positive mindset though so yeah, I'll try and hold into that haha

I'm 23 and I prefer old Priest so I don't think so
Most younger people have only been exposed to newer JP while older people listened to the material that was released in their time though, so that might be a big factor

what we should consider is how awesome they are since they manage to appeal in each generation, no matter which album is used for introduction

"Nice. Will def go here for my next Priest"
and why stop there? check all of their 70's material, it's quite awesome
even their debut (which is kinda weak imo) features some excellent progressive-minded heavy blues-rock songs

"Hell Patrol might be one of my favorite JP songs ever because Rob delivers way more balanced vocals on it"
There are a lot of songs on Painkiller that have a balanced vocal performance. One Shot at Glory, Night Crawler, A Touch of Evil, and Between the Hammer and the Anvil are good examples of that.
Also, calling '70s Priest forgotten is pretty inaccurate considering how much Sad Wings is still talked about and still put on lists of essential albums while Sin After Sin is basically left in the dust despite being even more of a metal album as we know today than Sad Wings.
