collier is pretty great when he's doing simple stuff (his track with john mayer being a recent example) and he's a stellar performer but i do find his more technical output pretty grating

sometimes feels like he's a walking proof of concept, curious to see what he sounds like in his late career, interesting dude

Yeah, like his claim to fame is his sheer mastery of music theory. Which is cool, but I feel like there’s a certain quality he lacks. Like he’ll figure out some ingenious chords and vocal harmonies but his voice itself is kinda milquetoast. Compare his voice and someone like Marvin Gaye and he’ll always pale in comparison. I get the feeling that he’ll always be in the lane he’s in rn.

Lots of people are masters of music theory that’s not impressive in and of itself tbh. If you make soulless music it means nothing.

"I also don't think I've ever heard a Jacob Collier song but to deny that he's talented as all hell would be an absolutely insane take. Don't think I'd dig his style, but damn"

Agreed with Potsy and MillionDead. If he couldn’t utilize music theory as effectively as he does, he’d be even more uninteresting. Being as good with theory as he is is cool, but it’s like that stereotypical TV nerd that is only the “smart” character because they read the textbook for fun and have it memorized. It’s like being able to do well at Jeopardy because you have lot of trivia memorized. Impressive in one way, but not in the way the medium usually would have called a genius

Pretty much 🤷

It’s like a music theory computer program ran a sequence on its table of contents

agree with what everyone says here and also, im just really sick of people being described as 'geniuses' or as having 'god tier talent' etc when really theyre just good at something theyve practiced and worked at

For guitarists that are absurdly good or id call genius (not that I know much about it tbh) would be Ben Weinman, Kurt Ballou, Devin, Mikael ( more earlier Opeth). Or ive missed the entire point and am talking in my own lil bubble

Also ive been awake since like 4 am so im quite dumb rn

I do enjoy a good rant and thus really like this review. Yeah, the band is very gimmicky in image and stuff, but the music isn't half as bad as you make it... possibly something like a 3 to me.

louis theroux making good documentaries makes him a good bloke
louis theroux being a good bloke who wears nerd glasses, sports dad fashion and is also inexplicably (but inarguably) a massive sex symbol makes him a genius
and lol thanks Donchivo, glad you had fun

I am just now learning of this group's visual aesthetic. I already hated the record and now it is coupled with more lame bullshit. Makes me squirm, mans.

bit iffy on some of the angles here. it is plenty valid to make music purely for the sake of exploring music's functionality and whether or not that tickles you personally will change from person to person. he writes a lot of genuinely compelling and awe inspiring passages. my grievances come from song structure and memorability, hence me highlighting his simpler works as i find them to be a fascinating middle ground, though i wouldn't begrudge anyone who loves his more exploratory stuff, warts and all.

feel like there's a strange bent on this site to decry music aimed at musicians as somehow less valid and i'm not entirely sure why. i get not having a preference for it, though the criticisms levied always feel really hollow
