ho boy, the fact that there are a breadth of opinions makes me more eager to give it a listen. This band has been off my radar for quite some time

Ghost Reveries is a must listen in that case

my first take is people are really gonna be fooled by the inclusion of growls on the new one because it’s still v much newpeth and honestly they barely impact on the experience at all for me

Some of the percussion is cool. I do like the inclusion of more ‘exotic’ instrumentation, in fact that represents a few of the better moments but a bugbear of mine is when band’s try and make everything sound epic with these symphonic keys etc… they don’t go overboard that often, but there are a couple of moments where I thought it was in danger of sounding a bit disney prog

'but there are a couple of moments where I thought it was in danger of sounding a bit disney prog'

I bet if angrydisneyguy reviewed it, they'd give it a high score

I guess the restraint in the orchestra keys compared to this makes TLWAT superior, I guess. It's very ICV

Yeah the one issue I have with the new album and ICV is the "epic" Disney orchestra moments with mikael locking in with them but they aren't too overbearing and are relatively few and far between. Other than that it's a very interesting album and the drums smack

Overall, I think it's pretty experimental without sounding unfocused

The start of S3 is the worst offender for me for the orchestral shit

I do like the strings (and woodwind parts, wtf?) of S4, lol

It’s been so long since I’ve heard this tbh, remember thinking it was pretty fun and had the ‘soul’ of Opeth (more-so than the previous two).

Okay, this isn’t all that in retrospect, what gives?! Probably felt like a tonic after Sorceress or something, but now it seems quite bland. Gentile. I want to say tame

I know listening immediately after Watershed would only lead to disappointment. Fatal error.

This has always been my least favorite of their prog rock albums but I need to listen to it again

Absolutely! One of the best from their second era for me, they sound like they are having so much fun here.
