where the hell do you hear pop in his work? he's a straight folk artist most of the time, only exceptions really being age of adz and enjoy your rabbit

I would say Chicago is a pretty poppy track. Definitely more on the indie side, but I think most of Illinois couldn’t be tacked as just “folk”. This or Swans for sure, even Michigan. But Illinois I think has just as much pop influence as folk.

Definitely gonna check him out. Sputnik has never steered me in the wrong direction.

Larkin I've found his stuff to be hit or miss but when he's on he is capable of excellence. This album is among my all time favorites.

Thanks man, I may start here.

there's absolutely no pop in illinois though

Pop might not be the right word, but Illinois is definitely more accessible. Soaring choruses, instrumental variation, more upbeat numbers. Like I hear more Coldplay styled pop-rock on it, than, say, "Our Endless Numbered Days" era Iron & Wine. Not to compare Coldplay and Sufjan, but I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised to hear something like it break through onto pop radio occasionally.

Idk, it’s pretty poppy. That’s not an insult.

Larkin, start with this one. It's his most concise record

Still #1 album of the decade

Wouldn’t argue with that.

So just based on the ratings, it seems like everything since Michigan and after is worth checking out? Because if that’s the case, I may just start with Michigan and go chronologically. That’s what I tend to prefer doing when discovering new bands.

Michigan is my personal fav of his but yes everything after it is amazing too.
I’ve never jammed the first 2.

Yeah, Michigan actually might be a good starting point. Outside of the Age of Adz style, it shows a big chunk of his variety that shows up in later albums, just maybe not quite as fleshed out (although I think a lot of people would debate that)

Really don't dig Michigan much

For me it’s C&L>Illinois>Age of Adz>Michigan=Seven Swans
I do think Michigan is a good introduction though. What’s your ranking neek? I’m curious since you have this at a 3.5.

Anything after the first two albums is a good place to start. Except maybe Age of Adz, not really representative of him overall (and it's my personal least favorite)

Still haven’t heard Age of Adz, I need to get on that.
