The Czar is the highlight for me.

@Inbred what parts you talking about?

*inhales*

Quintessence: the most annoying vocal line Troy has ever recorded "These wild hearts run", tacked on ending that hints at a flaccid wane of the band's urge to riff.

The Czar: Great song except for the fact that the pre-chorus/chorus rotation is rehashed for the th time at the end of the solo. This popular writing device in pop songs was forgivable on Oblivion, but two blatant perpetrations in 4 songs (one being a 4 part 11min suite) is just idiotic. Also Brent's solo is soul-less wank and wastes any emotion that the song was building up until that point.

Ghost Of Karelia: Not a bad song all in all, but I find the fact that the vocals, guitars and keyboards all follow the same melody pattern to be annoying.

The Last Baron: Someone please explain to me why a song that is supposed to be the epic unleashing of prog sensibilities by a brace of capable and experienced musicians comes off like a disjointed fap-fest of dead ends and then AGAIN relies upon repeating the catchiest parts to provide the illusion of continuity. When the song completely stops around the 3 min mark to introduce a build I almost cry with frustration.

In summation, I do not dispute the quality of the riffs and ideas on this album, I just find that much of my enjoyment is sapped by the lack of creativity in the arrangement that robs much of the effect that this album could have had. To my mind Mastodon was great at finding an original way to flow all their parts together in the albums preceding this one. Nothing seemed out of place, and every note had feeling behind it.

Very well-articulated Jed but I'll be damned if I didn't disagree with every word of what you said.

Still completely respect your opinion though.

aaaaaaand that's where i stopped reading (not really, i kept reading but i got mad ;) ). shredding does not always = wank. i find the czar to be so amazing because like you said, there's so much emotional build up and then the solo comes and somehow tops and sustains that emotion. easily one of my favorite songs / moments in all of music

When Brann sings "Please tell Lucifer he can't have this one" in the title track...

pretty sure that's troy. someone correct me if i'm wrong

I never said shiz about the t/t, that's flawless imo. I do think this is similar to Leviethan in quality, I just dont enjoy it as much. The boogie parts in Czar and Baron do rule, indeed.

This is just the nature of any successful band, their new material can't help but be held up and scrutinized against the old. I hear the solo in The Czar and I feel none of the emotion that I felt on Hearts Alive. I understand tho, and I'm not butt-hurt, this is Mastodon learning how to structure their music with simultaneous pop and prog elements. Their progress in that endeavor is apparent on the last 2 releases.

that was cool dude. awesome to see the bass part be played. i loved that slide-y part during the solo. vox kinda sucked tbh. i don't mean that as a diss, its tough to pull those off, especially while playing and you weren't even mic'd up. overall fun vid

Thanks man.

I plan on doing some other Opeth videos in the future, especially from the first two albums.

The fretless bass parts on Orchid and Morningrise are extremely fun to play.
