I'm just really loving how fucking wacky it is tbh, all the elements of a great Opeth record are there, but it somehow feels fresh

I find it wild when people can put new releases in the higher echelons of a great band's discog so immediately (a band they find 'great' that is)

It came out today. Steady on. This is for all artists, not just Opeth.

I haven't heard it yet so maybe I'm underestimating the impact it could have on me, but it usually takes me a while to place a fresh-off-the-shelf album so high, when their previous albums have the benefit of many years of growth and possibly nostalgia etc.

One thing I love about the new one that I can tell right away is that Walt's drumming is a huge callback to the Lopez days, and I'm all here for it (though Axe was absolutely fantastic as well and probably the highlight of these last 14ish years)

New ones good but i dont think its as good or comes close to their Death metal peak. Its certainly a direction i would thoroughly enjoy if they stayed on this path

'you sure Johnny will bash it?'

I trust Johnny enough to know that he won't be gaslit into thinking this is some kind of borderline meloldeaf prog masterpiece just because the band went for a pre Heritage production style and sprinkled in a few growls here and there. The scattershot, patchy songwriting is prominent af on at least two thirds of the album. Prolly one of the most nothingburger records of the year.

I hope I will not eat my own words lmfao

hmm, I'd like to state that while Pika's cutting dissection would be a tad concerning under normal circumstances, the fact he said "nothingburger" means he may have actually just lost his mind

just because you curate your taste based on Johnny's ratings doesn't mean you'll both align on this one, but you may be just right.
