For whatever reason selling my BN merch and donating the money seems like it'll make more of a difference than 1'ing their discography

touche

idk i guess that's as far as i'm willing to separate art from artist, this album is still amazing, but I don't want to support the band that made it anymore

It's strange how some pop stars and musicians get excused from messing around with underage girls and boys, but others have the careers and legacies largely destroyed. Public opinion is a mystery.

I think it's about the passage of time, society is less tolerant of this now. It's changed pretty drastically in the past 10 years

With Hugh Hefner's protective bubble gone, who knows who's going to be next.

There's a lot of good with that change, but there's also this rabid public condemnation of anyone accused of something by anyone without hardly a second thought, and it's pretty alarming. It's not more alarming than how many of them are true though. Of course false accusations happen, but they're rare.

social media era, not everyone knew about roman polanski at the time and those who did must've been like ehh, and then he made the pianist. now jen kirkman gets trapped in a room with louis CK as he jerks off in front of her and everyone knows about it.

i mean everyone these days has an opinion on controversial issues immediately, it's not unique to sexual harassment/abuse stories. but those have the element of "victim has nothing to gain by coming forward" which adds weight to their stories.

also I sort of suspect that if there wasn't a visceral public reaction then other abusers would feel slightly enabled. gotta be some consequences

social media definitely plays a role

but just think about how long the trope of "sleep with record label/movie studio exec" has existed without much being done about it

and then look at how weinstein imploded

I bet it's also a generational thing, and how people up to age 25-30 has social media and how the culture has changed public perception. You don't hear anyone up in arms about Bowie, RHCP, Led Zeppelin most likely, and all the other classic bands and pop stars who had people say they slept with underage fans.

Hopefully no one is actually doing that, cause again, the album's brilliant and changing the rating does absolutely nothing to curb this kind of behavior. I agree with what ProjectFreak said about selling the stuff and making donations more than anything.

someone on twitter recommended Safer Scene and that seems like the most appropriate donation recipient

it's a symbolic act at best, an attempt to chip away at the idea of "since the art is good, the artist's sins can be forgiven." But yeah I don't think it's the best course of action. Don't boo. Donate.

Yeah Safer Scene looks good, especially since a lot of this seems like it was typical of the era, (I didn't know much about that prior to this story). Good find.
