'Obscura's definitely my favorite of theirs. Absolutely bonkers with its experimentation and avant-garde elements, but that's a big part of what makes it so great' (2)

truly a one-of-a-kind album, even now - i.e. despite all the material that was influenced by it

Honestly, I still find that extremely fascinating. Despite influencing so many bands, it still stands on it's own as some truly unique material. That is a very impressive feat.

I wouldn't ever put this in the same bag of classic old school death metal albums like Close to a World below. This is more prog/tech thrash oriented than pure death metal. The debate in this particular genre would be with bands such as Cynic, Death, etc...

When it comes to old school death metal my fav album is still Close to a World below, followed by Altars of Madness.

Gorguts are on a league of their own and I find them hard to classify, specially Colored Sands... Abscondeeeeeeeeers

I mean yeah, no-one is saying you should

Categorise them in as wide or narrow terms as you wish.

Broadly this falls under the DM umbrella and is widely regarded as a classic of the genre

Not much use recommending to someone all the classics under the "broad dm umbrella" tho. There's a shitload of stuff I would or wouldn't like for a lot of reasons, one of them being subgenres. This is progressive metal more than just dm.

The guy said this didn’t grab him, but he’s been listening to DM that’s at least vaguely comparable to a lot of the recs. I see no issue here.

Those stacked chord harmonies in the t/t starting right before the 1 minute mark are one of the most beautiful things ever recorded.

There sure is lol, just not what I expected when I was like 'yeah ok lemme refresh that section just before 1 minute'. The oddly timed riff is awesome but yeah those notes are cool

I think these fellas are going to be back on streaming again soon, I heard that they got picked up by either RoadRunner, Relapse or Nuclear Blast. (...to be honest, I forget which one. LOL)
