A lot of how you rate those bands and how they appeal to you will come down to those distinctions I'd think. Even if subconsciously. Maybe.

At the beginning it was Metallica, then Megadeth took over. That's just me. When I look back at the type of Metal and bands I went on to explore and enjoy it makes sense to me.

Megadeth standsout a lot more for having a distinctive style. Not that it makes them better but at least its one thing everyone can agree

An alternative top 4 for me would probably be:

1. Sepultura

2. Voivod

3. Coroner

4. Sodom

Mix them together:

1. Metallica

2. Sepultura

3. Megadeth

4. Slayer

5. Voivod

6. Coroner

7. Sodom

8. Anthrax

Testament aren't bad either, I've just not delved into them too much.

putting this here just because it needs serious revising but my instincts are telling me we now have...

Metallica (perversely, my teenage edgelord self would hate this)

Slayer (previously top)

Megadeth (vox are an issue)

Anthrax (really don't rate 'em)

better than all the above currently and thus my top tier are...

Coroner

Voivod

Anacrusis

Sepultura over all

In their own way I'd say all the big four had vocal issues going forward...

Anthrax changed vocalist to mixed reaction and is Belladonna even that great a vocalist?, Hetfield became a bit of a 'Ooh-yeah-heh' speak/sing caricature esp on 'Lulu', and Tom Araya definitely has his limitations and tics too.

Shame if Mustaine's vocals (which generally got better in the 90s) stop people with Megadeth.

'Sepultura over all'

Metallica have the four classic albums, Sepultura can't quite compete with that as much as I love them.
