listening again i begrudgingly enjoy this a normal amount but a lot of the spontaneous genre transitions still really bug me. A lot of the metal parts don't continue long enough to feel totally fulfilling, whole thing feels like it can't get away from the metal parts quick enough. There are prog parts that feel like what the band should be doing harder on the next album tho--focusing on big synthy stuff mixed with straight prog metal a la modern krallice--and i rly hope they do invest in that direction hard.

Agreed with Zaru, they should do more of the proggy stuff going forward since they don't seem particularly interested in doing a lot of the DM shit

”they don't seem particularly interested in doing a lot of the DM shit”
man i’ve seen this a few times and i don’t get that from them at all lol this is still first and foremost a dm album to me, and i def don’t get the sense this is trying to get out of the metal parts quickly. stargate pt 3 and second half of message pt 1 don’t exist in an album that doesn’t want to be metal (among other sections)

The band is extremely talented and talented musicians refuse to box themselves into a specific genre or style of music. Claiming that they've abandoned one genre for another is doing them a disservice considering how varied this album is.

the issues i have are more like in Stargate I how it's escalating metal riffs for the first two minutes and then hard cuts to prog, kinda the same on Message I where it just keeps clipping back between the two jaggedly at the start. I don't hate it but it's could've been done better.
also the snare sound is too muffly which makes it muddle together with the kick drum so during every blast beat section they get kinda confused together in the mix.
