In most cases I'm in favor of separating the art from the artist but in a case like this where the artist's appeal is founded on their emotional honesty it's harder to do so.

I’d never worked out exactly where this band’s appeal stemmed from.
If it’s ‘the feels’ then that’s unfortunate in light of recent events.

I mean they are an "emo" group so I would imagine the appeal is in the feels

Hmmm, still on a 4.16...gonna check on the hour every hour, Boney you can take my UK time zone night shift.
I have a lot of patience but it’s not inexhaustible and that average needs to drop. I’m not sure I’ll get a solid night’s rest until it does.

I honestly don't think I'd like this band anyway but was going to give Devil & God a try just in case, now it might be hard to be objective even if they are just allegations (which admittedly is unfair).
You can't be part of Sput & not at least give that album a one-time spin, right?

It’s an unwritten rule and a right of passage yup
You are allowed to drop a 2 on that bitch though, that’s your Sput given right

'You are allowed to drop a 2 on that bitch though, that’s your Sput given right'
Agreed. If it deserves a 2, it shall receive a 2. I bet it's one of those dumb 'immune' albums where you can't go any lower. Like that sucky Dream Theatre album I tried to 1.5.

Agreed hard Aiwaz, I knew you were a good guy.

I would much prefer them with a different vocalist

Couldn't imagine a better way of destroying the legacy and mystery of my favorite band. This has been a insane year for Brand New. The highest highs and an all-eclipsing low. I hope when I listen to Deja or TDGARIM ten years from now, JLacey jerking off on skype is a thought I never have

Listening to this album now and there's a very subtle darker vibe now with the shit going on, I guess. I dig it. In the Water is a fucking jam

yea it definitely has an impact on their music. can't tell if its negative but definitely an impact

It's certainly more listenable than that Pwr Bttm record (which comes across as very disingenuous after the scandal). He's not selling a lie through the music, there's a sharp awareness now that his self-loathing is warranted.

yea like devil and god onward is fueled by regret and self hatred, and now we know its validated

I can't imagine that it could be anything but a negative impact. All I can really hope is that everything I have been through and associated with their music is something that can't be truly tarnished by real-world, non-abstracted stuff like this. I mean, even just SF being out was enough to make me worry that all those new tracks could influence how I listened to past records. But this? A disgraced Brand New? Jesus....

As it shouldn't; this is one of the best albums of the year.
|
| |
It depends. No, it shouldn’t automatically lower the ratings but if existing fans hear it differently now & can’t help getting less enjoyment from the music then ratings may be lowered, especially when you take lyrical content into consideration (something that’s probably very important to some fans).
