I'm still digesting it, and haven't even heard half of it. Don't know if a first listen gives off anything more than just ''okay, what the hell is going on here?''
|

Yeah, this is reminding me of how I felt listening to BTBAM's Colors II the first time. It's borderline overwhelming and will need countless listens to digest.

It's weird because the new album track titles conjure up some pretty crazy shit but it's their least ferocious and most timid release yet. It's not bad by any means because of it, just half the album takes a backseat basically. I personally don't think it really represents the near 20 reviews that have come out and given it a 9/10 or 10/10 because that shit just feels endorsed.

Well that's a drag. Will have to give it a shot bc I really like Pushing the Tides and Teardrinker. Guessing the album falls more in line with Sickle & Peace?

quiet mastodon good!

Eh, I'm guessing this will grow on me, but right now every song seems to follow the same route to me: Midtempo pace --> troy singing on verses --> Brann singing on choruses --> insert odd sounding riff into bridge --> extended guitar solo/maybe one more chorus.

@Jay, yeah but I would say a good portion of it is even lighter.

and by good portion, I mean like the last two on disc one, and like the whole second disc.

Has anyone else noticed that the first single for each album since CTS has been a heavier/proggier song for the fans, and then the second single is a more accessible/catchy tune for rock radio?
CTS it was Divinations then Oblivion, for the Hunter it was Black Tongue then Curl of the Burl, for OMRTS it was Chimes at Midnight then the Motherload (plz ignore High Road sorry sorry), for this one it was Sultan's Curse then show yourself, now for Hushed and Grim it's Pushing the Tides then Teardrinker

Warner Bros. probably has it down to a science. get the longtime fans (guaranteed money) back on board, then the second single brings in the crossover traffic from rock radio.

New album is for all those people saying they were on autopilot. I can't personally explain the 90 degrees of direction change they've done here, but it's obvious things have been shaken up tremendously. Sounds like a different band entirely from what we would expect. If EoS was an attempt to sound ''heavy'' again, the new album doesn't give a shit about expectations/directions/rules/possibilities...
I'm ending the rant here before it turns into copy-pasta (if it hasn't already). All I'm saying is the new album is just weird
