"read his empire empire review"
ok i bit and decided to take a look at it and... yikes. that paragraph about the lyrics was so hard to follow.
edit: the You Will Eventually Be Forgotten review is worse than that one.

the best part is where he turns the review into a journal entry about his abysmal his soul is

sometimes the 'personal reflection' review works, for example, the highlighted review for The Devil and God (as it was a follow up to a review that many considered amazing, from what I gather from the thread's first comments) but that Empire one is just... "the guitar part and the lyric part appeal to me". Its gross.

"He barely even talked about the album, that's pretty shitty"
yeah so on top of being a terrible reviewer and being insufferably emo, he is also known for having the worst/least knowledgable opinions on everything ever of anyone ive ever met in my entire life and is also just generally one of the least intelligent people ive ever spoken to

It's like... HOW do they appeal to you. Explain!

he's the kind of guy who would say shit like "smokers should all die" and "i got caught stealing my moms valium and now im grounded and sad"

@alc. I think it depends, i've read reviews before that are just stories or personal reflection pieces and they've told me a lot more about an album because theres a strong emotional connection between the listener and the material to suggest that its going to be something amazing even if your knowledge on what that thing may be is unknown.
That Empire! review however, is just a YouTube comment someone makes about applauding an album for having the basic elements of songwriting (except being GOOD yall) but dressed up with just a good number of hyperbole to justify a review length. Thats my issue with it. Because not only did I only take "its an album" from it, but I also have zero reason to believe I will be able to have an emotional connection with the work like the reviewer did, either.
Like I mentioned about Channing's Brand New review, theres a lot to the review that makes it interesting and convinced me to actually check the band out a few years ago. Because even though any words on the album are vague, its compensated by a compelling narrative of someone who loss the meaning of something they loved by being too obsessed with it but you can still at least feel that connection you once had. And thats an interesting spin on an album that youre calling a 'classic.

Usually good personal reviews make me want to listen to the album reviewed.
With that, I don't even care about the album. In fact I don't even know what genre it is

"No matter how many times I grow cynical or think I've finally become numb, I'm able to block out all the noise inside my head, shut up and listen, and really feel"
Yeah this is why I don't listen to emo
