I had a sudden change during my adolescence. I was a hardcore fan of Nirvana until I discovered the smashing pumpkins and I started to despise Nirvana. I still feel they're an overrated band, and in terms of quality the pumpkins cleaned the floor with them at their own game.
Siamese Dream > nevermind
Mellon Collie > In utero

And I moved away FURTHER when I started listening to alice in chains and soundgarden.

beyond the obvious hilarity of bashing either of those bands for being overrated over the other, how in the fuck does mellon collie play the same game as this

They are a great introduction to the alternative world, but other than that I still find them generic and accesible to the mainstream ear. On the other hand bands like Hum were more honest with their music and they were better in terms of songwriting and lyrics.

mellon collie is a flood-produced heap of excess full of b-tier musical theatre anthems
this is albini-produced leanass battery acid made up of kill-urself downers
hum (at their best) being better than either does not make that false equivalence any less idiotic

Maybe in your country but not in mine. Argentina's a weird country for english speaking bands...
And the comparison for Mellon Collie, is because I find the angry songs more interesing on the pumpkins side
XYU > radio friendly unit shifter
Bodies > Rape me
Tales of a scorched earth > Tourette
And I can go on and on...

pumpkins' post-siamese angry songs are trash and tales of a scorched earth is one of the most embarrassing songs of the 90s but do go on

Dude I just caught that you said Hum are better lyricists than Kurt? That's just silly

Awww did I piss you off? Then my work is done
|

no, that's fairly accurate tbh. matt talbot is an excellent lyricist, no shade to kurt but he never had the same craft
both are ofc preferable to corgan's overwritten tripe

Alright then...I dig the romantic space poetry but always felt Kurt conjured some profound archetypal shiz

I'm with you Explode, Kurt's stuff hits like a hammer.

Broken hymen of your highness I'm left black
Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back

kurt had some raw truths and they most definitely hit hard as nails when all goes (un)well, but after a certain point it feels like depressive free association and i'd say talbot has a more consistent and overall stronger grip over his schtick
on second thoughts it's kind a silly comparison bc kurt's writing was mostly a gift to this band, but equally it's kinda dumb to make a strong call either way. classic rodrigo lobotomising this thread into a nursery scuffle, i apologise for being drawn into it
