I can def see how this would be disappointing to people who got into Mastodon through Leviathan or CtS but uhhhh not too hype on the implication that shifting from crazy intense sludgy prog to catchy, slightly proggy stoner rock means "getting complacent".
If anything I'd say Emperor of Sand is where they start sounding complacent to me, I don't even dislike that album or anything but it's pretty much just Mastodon-by-the-numbers.

If anything I'd say Emperor of Sand is where they start sounding complacent to me [2] sorta. 'Round the Sun had traces of that, but Emperor is where it became really obvious.

You're probably right tbh, OMRTS definitely has its own sound to me but it was also my introduction to the band so I'm a bit biased towards it.

Going through this one for the first time. Almost got 2 spins in. Honestly, I just don't see much of anything to thoroughly enjoy in this. Not bad, just incredibly unmemorable as far as Mastodon material is concerned. Stargasm is the only song that has managed to make an overtly positive impression on me thus far. Curl of the Burl and Creature Lives are just not good at all. The rest is just a big fat "meh". Guessing this will land at a 3 for m, but I'm probably going to just keep repeating this disc til my work day is over.

I actually started listening to Mastodon when this came out, so I got to learn this rock n' roll face of the band first, so this album has a special place in my heart.

Alright 4 spins is more than enough. Stargasm grew on me more. Also ended up liking Thickening quite a bit. Curl of the Burl and Creature Lives are still the worst here and are just grating. And FUCK this album is just beyond bland the rest of the runtime. Never returning to this.
After being incredibly surprised by OMRTS and enjoying EoS, I really was not expecting to dislike any of their material. But this is, by a rather large margin, the weakest link imo
