honestly pretty based komp take up there tho. Night on the Sun is incredible and no one wants to admit it but Stars is kinda a mess

i think in a vacuum night on the sun is a better tune. in terms of the tracklisting though i think stars is perfect right where it is

night on the sun woulda been like 2nd to life like weeds here if it was in the running ye, tho ive always slotted it in place of rat. turns that run into night on the sun - lives - life like weeds which makes for a magnificent late album stretch

"no one wants to admit it but Stars is kinda a mess"
Stars is great, Night is great, but Stars is the culmination and focus of this album, stop with your slanderous libel mr 5215
|
| |
Stars post-culmination is a messy messy unravelling and moderate misuse of potential but yh this tracklist (also a mess) needs it
Gravity is drippy bollocks and Lives is so concertedly dEeP it physically hurts me. First line is Shia Labeouf territory
|
| |
I don't like Gravity anymore, but it used to be the only Modest Mouse song I liked.

first 2 minutes of Stars are annoying af with that cheesy vocal effect. then it's pretty good for a while. then it gets fun when it speeds up but the right wing left wing chicken wing line is dumb as all hell. then the outro bit is jammin enough but WHERE DO CIRCLES BEGIN feels like it comes from a Porcupine Tree song, Isaac should not do falsetto vocals
overall hit rate is like a 7/10 but none of these parts feel like they need to be from the same song so I'm a bit harsher on it. sure ain't no Teeth like God's Shoeshine

Is it constantine era labeouf, or eagle eye, or nymphomaniac
|

Congrats Johnny ur takes on Lives have seeped into my brain enough to knock it out of my overall MM top 20 (the lyrics are in fact kind of lame and fake-deep, the melodies and production are mostly lovely)
On the flipside Gravity is perfect and u just hate it cuz it was in car commercials xp

"first 2 minutes of Stars are annoying af with that cheesy vocal effect"
opening is monumental i'm sticking my fingers in my ears and repeating lalalalalala until the world goes away from here on in
|
| |
ronwa take is a 9/10 slam dunk tbh, love it. if we all antihype different parts of the MM corpus we can take down capitalism à la Many Musketeers (fogza take your shot now or forever stand apart) THIS PLANE IS DEFINITELY CRASHING

i do not stand with you, if i must be cut down by superior numbers for my principles so be it
i'll rag on their last 3 but this record is a classic, sorry
|
| |
good news should not be spared it is mostly legit bad imo
i cant recall the last time i listened to a modest mouse song released past 2000
|
| |
Still listen to the singles from good news and we were dead quite a bit but I'm pretty much never enticed to sit down for a front to back listen of either

i don't mind good news, and tiny bits of we were dead. the whale song is great.
|
| |
would rather listen to WWD end-to-end than this by a decent margin, that one at least is pretty fun
|
| |
I used to think Good News was one of their most consistent albums before realizing I pretty much always put on something else or tune out around Bukowski/This Devil's Workday
|
| |
Wwd is another one in dire need of a fan edit, swap some shit like Fire it up for Satellite Skin and we're cookin with fire babey
