Piece of Time is great, but it shows a more embryonic version of Atheist that didn't have the trademark jazz fusion elements yet

"Elements is easily better than Piece of Time tho" - Whoa.

"Piece of Time is great, but it shows a more embryonic version of Atheist that didn't have the trademark jazz fusion elements yet" - And also influenced literally every single band at the time, and was probably the first technical death metal album out there

it does seem bonkers that Time was released when it was, truly ahead of the curve

Just did a binge of classic dm and this was one of the albums I heard for the first time. Incredibly impressive on a technical level but didn't grab me like Erosion of Sanity or Those Once Loyal did. All really great albums though, can't believe I slept on so much great dm for so lo

My go-to dm albums up to now have basically been None So Vile, Close to a World Below and The Satanist which are all classics imo but I def feel like I'm starting to get a broader perspective on the genre now

Obscura's definitely my favorite of theirs. Absolutely bonkers with its experimentation and avant-garde elements, but that's a big part of what makes it so great

there's an absolute shedload of stuff to get through but 'tier 1' old school classics would always include Consuming Impulse & Onward to Gologotha, for me

I'll refrain from bombarding you with recs, the classics are pretty well documented

Obscura is like a test of "can you get past the first song and still say you're enjoying the album." It never gets weirder than the first track. I love that fucking album
